The start of the 2011-2012 school year has been delayed another day for two area school districts as a result of Hurricane Irene.

Pleasant Valley and Northern Lehigh school districts remain closed today due to the aftermath of the storm.According to the Pleasant Valley website, school officials state,"On Tuesday, Aug. 30, the Pleasant Valley School District will be closed due to the aftermath of the hurricane. If school is in session on Wednesday, kindergarten students will have orientation. There will be no transportation for kindergarten students on Wednesday. Transportation for kindergarten students will begin on Thursday.On Northern Lehigh's website, school officials report, "Portions of our district are still without power. PPL was supposed to restore power by 9 p.m. this evening (Monday), but that was not accomplished. Because power is still out the administration has decided to cancel school for Aug. 30."Hurricane Irene, which rode up the East Coast this past weekend dropped several inches of rain and brought gusty winds to the region.Some parts of the TIMES NEWS coverage area escaped with only minimal damage, while others, such as Monroe, Lehigh and Schuylkill counties, experienced downed trees, flooding and large-scale power outages.The hurricane also caused the deaths of 40 people from Florida through the New England states.
