Driver of wrecked car is identified

West Penn Township Chief of Police Brian Johnson reported the driver of the car involved in the early morning crash at the intersection of state routes 309 and 895 was William Hunter, 33, of 3 Sand Spring Circle, East Penn Township. Photos of the accident appeared in Wednesday's TIMES NEWS.

Johnson said he was told by Hunter he was a passenger in the car and that he was being given a ride by a male named Matt. The chief states Hunter told him they rolled the car and that both fled the scene.Johnson viewed a surveillance tape of a nearby business which clearly shows the crash and only one person, Hunter, emerging from the overturned car. Hunter later told Johnson the car, a 2006 Toyota, was a gift from a friend three weeks ago, Robert Hess of 2474 Summer Valley Road, New Ringgold.Hunter is being charged with driving while under suspension, providing false information to police, possibly driving under the influence (DUI), leaving the scene of an accident and interfering with a police investigation. Hunter has had three DUI convictions, it was reported.Johnson found Hunter hiding behind the E Z Mart and had to chase him down after he ran into a wooded area.
