Timber industry returns to PSU

Pennsylvania Forest Products Association is bringing its bi-annual trade exposition and educational workshops back to Penn State, Thursday and Friday, June 3-4. This event is in partnership with Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences and School of Forest Resources and will be held at the Ag Progress Days site at Rock Springs, on Route 45, nine miles southwest of State College.

"Timber 2011: The Forest Products Equipment and Technology Exposition" is an opportunity for forest-products companies to hone their business skills, learn about the latest production practices and see new technology. According to Penn State's Bob Oberheim, Timber 2011 manager, Pennsylvania is the leading hardwood-producing state in the nation.Pennsylvania is home to more than 2,700 forest-product companies and 500,000 forest landowners. The forest-products industry has $16 billion in annual sales and generates about $27 billion a year for the state's economy."As we emerge from the recession, forest-product companies need to be poised to take advantage of new business opportunities," Oberheim said. "To do that, they need to know about the latest technologies, production methods, business practices and regulations. At Timber 2011, they can get all of that and more."Organizers expect as many as 100 commercial exhibitors at the event, which is aimed at loggers, sawmill operators, value-added processors and forest landowners in Pennsylvania and surrounding states.Demonstrations will feature a range of forest-product technologies. In-the-woods demonstrations will include cut-to-length harvesters and forwarders. Sawmill equipment, stump splitters and horizontal grinders will be demonstrated on the show grounds, and a ride-and-drive area will allow attendees to test-drive log skidders.Parking and admission is free to Timber 2011, and for information, call 814-863-2873 or visit the show website at
