Two men who broke into a West Penn Township home on Friday evening probably will think twice about returning to the scene of their crime.

The men were discovered in the cellar of a vacant farmhouse at 196 Ash Circle, Andreas, at about 6:30 p.m. when relatives of the late owners, who live a short distance down the road, spotted a maroon Lincoln Mark IV with tinted windows parked near the house.They peered into the car but no one was inside. They then checked on the house. The front door was locked, they said, and no windows had been broken. As the couple, who are in their late 60s, rounded the house to check the back, they noticed a board had been moved from the cellar door, and that a trash bag sat nearby. As they approached the cellar door, it was opened and they saw a man with a bald head emerge. They could see that another man was also in the cellar.The bag, it turned out, contained a wooden clock that had been taken from the house.The woman proceeded to loudly scold the man, whom they described as in his 60s, Caucasian, about 6 feet tall with a bald head; telling him that her parents had worked hard all their lives for their home and belongings and that he had no right to steal from them.At the same time, her husband picked up a hefty tree limb from the ground and began to beat the man and a second man, described as a chubby Hispanic in his 40s, breaking the limb as he whaled into them.The men quickly fled, the couple said.The couple were unable to get the license number of the car, and said they called township police, who are investigating the incident.Police Chief Brian Johnson on Monday said Officer Osenbach met with the couple minutes after they called police.The car has damage on the passenger side front end, and matches the description of one that hit a mailbox at Deere Lane and Ash Circle, and a stop sign at Ridge Road and Ash Circle, about two weeks ago, he said.On Saturday, a sign appeared on the front door of the farmhouse, warning would-be intruders. "Notice: Before you enter, call your undertaker," the sign says.
