Summit Hill Lions join in cell phone program

The Summit Hill Lions Club will partner with Oklahoma City-based PaceButler Corporation to conduct an Earth Day Celebration cell phone drive.

April 22 will mark the 40th anniversary of the Earth Day Celebration, however, donations of cell phones can be dropped off prior to that date. The club will collect the used phones, which will be recycled and sold, the purchase price to be used to benefit the Summit Hill Food Pantry.Environmental Protection Agency reports state most cell phones contain lead, arsenic, beryllium, mercury cadmium, lithium and other harmful elements. These elements are known for causing severe harm to the human body, which can damage the central and peripheral nervous systems, cause seizures, retardation and/or high blood pressure, damage to the kidneys and liver, result in severe damage to the digestive tract and pose risks in the neurological development of unborn fetuses. Not only will the drive benefit the Summit Hill Food Pantry, but it will also prevent harmful materials from ending up in the landfill. The Summit Hill Lions Club has been serving the community for 12 years. With more than 45,000 clubs and 1.3-million members, the Lions Club is the world's largest service club organization. As a convenience to donors, the Lions Club has set up cell phone depository boxes at the following locations: the Summit Hill branch of First Niagara Bank; Northeast Chemical and Supply Co., Lansford; Vermillion's Dental Clinic, Summit Hill; the Tamaqua Area Elementary School; and Hiles Brothers Plumbing & Heating. Donors are asked to make sure the telephone service of the phone is inactivated before they are dropped off. Also, SIM cards and accessories are not necessary. For more information, contact Lions Club member Janel Tirpak, 570-645-7850.
