A career in community service could one day be in the cards for several Northern Lehigh High School students.

The students competed in the International Rotary's 4-Way Test Speech Contest sponsored recently by the Slatington Rotary Club.Within five to seven minutes, the students had to speak on a personal topic that addressed questions of the things we think, say, or do.Those questions were: Is it the truth; is it fair to all concerned; will it build goodwill and better friendships; and will it be beneficial to all concerned.When all was said and done, junior Kirsten Leskowich nabbed first place, senior Nicole Czarnecki second place, and sophomore Anthony Connell third place.The trio of students will go on to deliver their speeches to Slatington Rotary Club members on April 14 at their regularly scheduled meeting, where each will be presented with a cash prize.In addition, Leskowich will represent the Slatington Rotary at the Regional Contest, which will be held at 10 a.m. on April 16 at Parkland High School. The winner of the Regional competition will then compete at the Rotary District Competition on April 29 at Bear Creek Resort in Macungie. The winner of that competition will receive $1,000.The Rotary's 4-Way Test Speech Contest is designed to acquaint youth with Rotary, and specifically, the tenets of the 4-Way Test; to demonstrate and enhance Rotarians' commitment to youth; to heighten awareness of Rotary among parents, school officials, and the community at large; to recognize, encourage, and reward hard work and accomplishment in our youth; and to provide an opportunity for Rotarians to participate in a Community/Vocational Service program, which focuses on the 4-Way Test as our standard of behavior.Nicholas Sanders, Interact Club Advisor and teacher at NLHS, supervised the event held in the high school library/media center.Gary Fedorcha, president-elect of Slatington Rotary, welcomed guests and explained the contest, which was judged according to a rubric.The judges were Charles Breidinger of Benjamin Reality and Slatington Rotary secretary, Lynne Fedorcha, former NLSD administrator and Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit education consultant, and Marie Johns, news anchor and local TV personality from Blue Ridge Communications TV13.
