Golden Agers

The meeting of March 14 of the Panther Valley Golden Agers was attended by 40 members. President Ronnie Bazik opened the meeting with a prayer and a moment of silence for the victims of the Japanese tsunami. Louise Serfass read some interesting facts for St. Patrick's Day. Irene Hudasky led a songfest of Irish songs.Prayers were recited for four recently deceased members Martha Ciarvella, Angelo Riccette, Steve Shigo, and Frank Marek.On March 28, practice for chorus will begin at 11 a.m. with the meeting following at 1 p.m. at St. Joseph's Hall in Summit Hill. The guest speaker will be Joseph Paluck MS of St. Luke's Miners Rehab and Wellness Program.Bingo will be played, if enough interest is shown.Anthracite LLThe Anthracite Little League (Summit Hill and Nesquehoning) will meet on Thursday, March 24, at 7 p.m. at the Nesquehoning Borough Building. All families are encouraged to attend.On Friday, March 25, all registered 11- and 12-year-olds will meet with the coaches at the Nesquehoning Little League Field, and all 7 to 10-year-olds will meet with the coaches at the Summit Hill Little League Field, both at 5:30 p.m.The league will hold tryouts on Saturday, March 26, at the Nesquehoning Little League Field as follows: 7- and 8-year-olds, noon; 9- and 10-year-olds, 1:15 p.m.; 11-year-olds, 2:30 p.m.; and 12-year-olds, 3:30 p.m. In the event of inclement weather, a league representative will contact all parents.For more information, parents can contact Roobhenn Smith, league president, (570) 645-2272.Summit HillDemocrats to meetThe Jeffersonian Democratic Club of Summit Hill will meet tonight at 7 o'clock in the Summit Hill Borough Hall. All children who want to prepare to sing for Easter, are asked to come at 5:30 p.m.NesquehoningVFW auxiliaryThe regular monthly meeting of the Nesquehoning VFW Ladies Auxiliary was held on Tuesday, March 8, at the Post Home with President Amanda Breiner presiding.Sign ups for the Buddy Poppy Queen and King Program are open to children and grandchildren of all members between the ages of 4 and 12.Membership stands at 66 of 75 paid for 2011. Those who have not yet paid their dues are requested to do so as soon as possible.A Miller Community Bloodmobile collection was held at the Post Home on Feb. 23. Future dates are April 27 and June 22.The annual Loyalty Day Program will be held on Sunday, May 1. More information will be available next month.The post and auxiliary hosted a District 20 meeting on Sunday, Feb. 26. Albrightsville will host the May 22 meeting and annual convention.The annual Easter Egg Hunt will be held on Saturday, April 16, at noon at the VFW grounds at the east end of town, weather permitting. Children and grandchildren of all members may sign up at the Post Home before the end of March.Donations were made to the Easter Egg Hunt, the Nesquehoning Conservation Club for the Fishing Derby and the National Wheelchair Games, sponsoring the Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center.End of the year reports are due by early April. A meeting will be held on March 29 for those involved to do the reports.Member Audrey Gogal expressed her concern that our school children no longer recite the Pledge of Allegiance and suggested the VFW and their auxiliaries begin a grass-roots effort to return the tradition to our schools.The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 12, 6:30 p.m. at the Post Home. Nomination and election of officers will be held at this meeting. All members are encouraged to attend.
