Ex-Lehighton woman's lover charged with her murder

A veterinarian has been charged with the murder of a former Lehighton resident.

State police at Bethlehem charged David A. Rapoport, 30, of Upper Gwynedd Township, near Lansdale, with the shooting death of Jennifer L. Snyder, 27. Rapoport was taken into custody at the home of his parents in Philadelphia, on Tuesday and charged with two counts of homicide. He was incarcerated in the Lehigh County prison without bail.Troopers said Rapoport is charged with shooting Snyder to death and also for the death of Snyder's unborn child. Snyder was 10 to 12 weeks pregnant at the time of her death. The child was Rapoport's, troopers said. Rapoport, who is married, was having an affair with Snyder. The two met while Rapoport was working at the Maple Hills Veterinary Hospital on Kressler Road in Lower Macungie Township, where Snyder was employed as a veterinary technician. Most recently, troopers said, Rapoport was working at the Harleysville Veterinary Hospital.According to troopers Snyder was shot three times with a 9mm gun. She was shot once in the back and twice in the mouth. She was killed last Wednesday with her body being found on Friday morning in woods off Game Preserve Road at the Trexler Nature Preserve, in North Whitehall Township. Her body was wrapped in a blanket which was covered with bleach and plastic bags and bound with duct tape. Found near the body was car glass and a spent 9mm round.Troopers found Snyder's car on Friday abandoned behind a building along Independence Drive in the Schnecksville area of North Whitehall Township. Troopers said the car was blood-soaked.The investigation by troopers included reviewing surveillance footage from cameras behind the building where the car was found, tracking purchases made by Rapoport and finding key pieces of evidence in his car, her car, a trash container and at the preserve where the body was located.District Attorney James Martin told the media that troopers believe Snyder was killed about 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the nature preserve.According to the affidavit of probable cause filed in the case, troopers saw on the video surveillance Snyder's car being backed into a parking space about 1:20 p.m. Wednesday and a man matching Rapoport's description getting out of it, putting an item in a trash container and leaving the area. Found in the trash container was a bottle of Target-brand bleach with blood smeared on it.Troopers also interviewed Snyder's roommate. The two women resided in an apartment at the hospital where Snyder worked. The roommate told troopers that Snyder and Rapoport were dating and that she became pregnant. She told them Rapoport became angry about it and the two separated briefly.Rapoport then made contact with Snyder to resume the relationship. The report also stated that while speaking with the roommate, she received a text message from Snyder's cell phone. The message, it was later determined, had been sent about 12 hours after Snyder had been killed.Rapoport was interviewed by troopers and first said he hadn't talked with Snyder for months, but later admitted having a relationship with her and not wanting his wife to find out.Troopers got consent from Rapoport to search his vehicle. Recovered was a 9mm gun from the trunk, baby wipes in the backseat and a roll of duct tape in a backpack. Later, with a search warrant, troopers found Snyder's cell phone under Rapoport's driver's seat. Behind the seat was an open box of garbage bags that matched the bags Snyder's body was wrapped in.Also, store receipts showed Rapoport bought bleach, duct tape, baby wipes and a towel from a Target store in North Wales, Montgomery County, on Wednesday, about two hours before he was to meet with Snyder.Martin told the media it was too early in the case to decide if he would seek the death penalty.Snyder was a 2001 graduate of Lehighton Area High School and lived in the Lehighton area until moving to the apartment near her employment some time ago. She graduated from Lehigh Carbon Community College with a veterinarian technician degree. She had been employed at the Maple Hill business since 2007.Her obituary appeared on page four of Tuesday's TIMES NEWS.
