Bike night will stay in Lehighton

It is official - Bike Night will remain in Lehighton.

Lehighton Borough Council has given permission for the event to be held Saturday, Aug. 13.The new sponsor will be the Lehighton Downtown Improvement Committee.The event was co-sponsored for 13 years by Lehighton Borough and the Lehighton Bike Night Committee, with the purpose to raise money for the police and fire departments.The Bike Night Committee said it was no longer able to host the event and suggested the LDIC might consider hosting it."We will give LDIC the same consideration as the previous groups that held Bike Night," said Scott Rehrig, a member of Lehighton Borough Council, "and the borough will give any assistance it can."Bike Night always attracts thousands of motorcyclists. It was started by borough resident Edward Finney and is held around the downtown parks.In other borough business:• Council approved the use of the Community Center and Baer Memorial Park for Senior Games from May 2-11.• Rehrig was approved as the voting delegate for the Pennsylvania State Association of Boroughs. Council President Grant Hunsicker will serve as alternate delegate.• Council agreed to fly the Red Cross flag at the municipal building during March for Red Cross Month.• Approval was given for the purchase of a 2011 Ford Crown Victoria Interceptor police car from Keystone Communications.• An ordinance regarding wind turbines was approved.• Residents of Stedman Avenue will be advised they have to install new curbing for a street project. Meetings will be called with the residents to detail the project.
