George Schreiber of Brodheadsville addressed the Pleasant Valley School Board Thursday night with a few questions and statements concerning the 2011-2012 proposed budget.

He asked if the proposed budget showed a nine percent increase from last year and Dr. Douglas Arnold, PVSD superintendent did confirm that saying it was only the preliminary budget, not the final number."At this time of year, it's never the final budget. We have never come in close to that number," he saidThe PVSD approved the 2011-2012 preliminary budget of $94,037,252 with a millage rate of 156.333 mill. This is up from last year's 2010-2011 budget of 143.290 mill.Schreiber said he understood that but wanted to know if it was true that if Act I allows a district to raise the budget above two percent, if the district couldn't get waivers and if the question of raising the budget could be placed on the election ballot as a referendum."We do file for exceptions. We are within the parameters of the ad so it's not necessary to do so," said Dr. Arnold.Susan Famularo, the district's business manager said that the district will receive notification from the state on March 8.Schreiber then asked if the retirement incentive the district offered last year was successful and Dr. Arnold replied that it was very successful. Schreiber asked if the district was going to do the same again this year and Dr. Arnold said he didn't know yet.In closing, Schreiber said, "Hopefully you people will dig in and do the right thing" and received a hearty round of applause from many in the audience.After the meeting, Schreiber said he is a frustrated taxpayer and he and several others are in the process of organizing a grassroots group to get involved in what is going on in the district."This board is not doing us justice," he said.
