Jim Thorpe man wins million dollar lottery

Published July 14. 2011 05:02PM

Brien Meinhart was scheduled for surgery on May 6.

He was not planning on working on May 5, but eventually decided that he would go in for a half-day.

That decision changed his life.

On his way to work, Meinhart, who is a Jim Thorpe resident, stopped at Giant Super Market in Quakertown to purchase a coffee. As he made his purchase, he decided to buy a scratch-off ticket, the "Million Dollar Mega Multiplier." The "Million Dollar Mega Multiplier" is a $20 ticket that has five top prizes of $1 million.

A few scratches later, Meinhart found himself in disbelief and $1 million dollars richer.

"I was shocked," he said during a phone interview this morning, "I couldn't believe it."

On May 6, Meinhart went through with his surgery to repair his tendon. After the surgery, he went to the Wilkes-Barre lottery office to claim his prize.

What does Meinhart plan to do with his winnings?

"I'm on my way right now to pay off my mortgage," he said this morning.

He also plans to invest it.

This isn't the first time Lady Luck has smiled on Meinhart, he said that he has won $5,000, $2,500, and a few $1,000 scratch-off jackpots before.

"Everyone tells me I'm lucky," he said. "This is still kind of a little hard to believe though, but I think it will hit me when I have the deed to my home in my hands."

Also another big winner named in May was Richard A. Wilson of Lehighton, who won $24,000 on the "Pure Gold" lottery ruboff game. A third couple, Ben and Kerrie Gelezinsky of White Haven, was named the winner of a $725,000 Cash Five jackpot on July 4.

The Pennsylvania Lottery was established in 1971 with the purpose to generate funds to benefit older Pennsylvanians. Since its inception, the lottery has paid out billions to winners of scratch-off and daily lottery number games; as well as to fund a variety of programs for senior citizens.
