Five area people were among 38 who were admitted into the ARD (Accelerated Rehabilitated Disposition) Program, Tuesday afternoon at the Schuylkill County Courthouse. The program is reserved for first offenders who committed non-violent crimes and by accepting the terms imposed by a judge they can clear their criminal record by completing the sentence. Distirct Attorney James P. Goodman made the motion to admit them into the program which was granted by President Judge William E. Baldwin who imposed the sentences as follows:

George Semko, Jr., 56, of 112 Gay Street, Tamaqua, charged by Trooper Timothy Keating with dui (driving under the influence) on Route 309 in West Penn Township last May 27, was placed on probation 12 months, assessed $500 to defray the cost of the ARD program, pay $300 to SAE (Substance Abuse Education) fund, $50 to CJEA (Criminal Justice Enhancement Account), $60 to Schuylkill Medical Center, perform 10 hours community service, pay a $50 monthly fee for each month on probation, attend alcohol highway safe driving school and receive outpatient counseling. A charge of depositing waste on a highway (tossed out beer can) was nol prossed.Susan M. Whalen, 55, of 1246 Tumbling Run Road, Tamaqua, charged by Corporal Duane Frederick, Rush Township Police, with possession of drug paraphernalia when stopped on Tuscarora Park Road in Barnesville last June 26 was placed on probation 12 months, assessed $350, pay $100 To SAE fund, a $50 probation fee and perform 10 hours community service.
