Hurricanes stay alive

It took two days, but the Franklin Township Hurricanes got what they wanted.

After sustaining their first loss in the Keystone Babe Ruth League's National Division double-elimination tournament on Monday, the Hurricanes didn't need long to bounce back as they took it out on Allen Township with a 6-3 victory Thursday night. It was the second time the Hurricanes got the best Allen Township in this year's tournament. They also scored an 8-6 win last Saturday.Last night it took a solid six-inning pitching performance by Brandyn Gatens and two productive innings by the Franklin Township offense to earn the chance to play for the division championship. The Hurricanes will now get a second chance at the Bushkill Township team that handed them an embarrassing 14-3 setback in the winner's bracket final earlier in the week."It definitely feels good to get a second chance at them," said Hurricanes' catcher Zac DeMarco. "We got a reality check with that big loss a few days ago. But this game should show us that we're ready to play them now."The Hurricanes will travel to Bushkill Township on Saturday with the intentions of redemption. If they win that game, the same two teams will meet on Monday for the North Division championship."Well, the biggest thing is that we came in after losing Monday's game to Bushkill with a lot of confidence now," Hurricane interim manager Donnie Rehrig said. "We do have to beat them twice at their field. Hopefully, we can just build on this."You got to win the first one to get to the second one. So, we're just going to play one game at a time and see how it works out."After Gatens was the lone batter to get a hit off Allen Township starter Tyler Rothdeutsch in the first inning,. DeMarco got things started in the second by leading off with a single. Ben Stermer followed with a single to put DeMarco in scoring position at second. One out later, Heath Markley's single plated DeMarco with the game's first run. Stermer scored on a wild pitch and Dean DiBonifazio followed with an RBI single to score Markley. Dave Behler capped the four-run second inning with a single that scored DiBonifazio. After Gatens suffered his lone bad inning, allowing Allen Township to score three runs on three hits in the third, DeMarco gave his pitcher a more comfortable lead back in the bottom half of the inning.Gatens started things off with his second single of the day. With one out, and a 2-1 count on him, DeMarco needed one swing to give the Hurricanes' a three-run lead as he belted a two-run home to left-center.It was a long time coming for "Pudge" as the Hurricanes call him as DeMarco earned himself the game ball from the coaching staff by recording his first round tripper in a few years."Pudge" has been hitting the ball hard all year," Rehrig said. "And, it's finally nice to see him get a hold of one and get his first homer since Little League."The Franklin Township pitching staff took it from there, blanking Allen Township over the final four innings.Gatens only allowed a single in the fifth and one in the sixth. Behler added a strong seventh inning to pick up the save."We got what we wanted from Brandyn," Rehrig said. "He started off a little slow. But, once he got settled in, he pitched with a lot of confidence."It's also nice to have someone like Behler at the end. It's good to have someone out there you can trust and that you know gives it his all every time he pitches."Allen Township 003 000 0 - 3 7 1Franklin Township 042 000 x - 6 11 2Gatens, Behler (7) and DeMarco; Rothdeustch and Sambo.
