Band rehearsals

The Tamaqua Raider Band will begin preparing for the 2010 Summer Band Camp with two rehearsal sessions. Summer band rehearsals will be held July 20 and July 27, from 9-11 a.m., in the band room.New and old band members rehearsal will be held Aug. 3. New members, drum majors, officers and captains will meet from 4-5:30 p.m. that day, followed by a pizza party. From 6-8 p.m., all musicians will meet to prepare the music and marching techniques for the upcoming season.Band Camp will begin Aug. 9 at 8 a.m.Sorority newsOfficers of the Preceptor Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority met recently to discuss plans for the upcoming sorority year, assigning meeting dates and hostesses. All members will be required to host at least one meeting and conduct one cultural program. A list of potential programs will be available to help members with their topic choices.The Summer meeting will be held Aug. 11, at 7:30 p.m., at the home of Donna Gerber.Beginning Day will be held Aug. 25, at 6 p.m., at the Lake Hauto Beach Pavilion. The program will be "Celebrating the Beginning of the Sorority Year and the End of Summer." Members are to bring an appetizer or dessert, and the recipes, which will then be combined into a pamphlet.The chapter also has a Facebook page for members to access to keep in touch with the sorority happenings - Beta Sigma Phi-Tamaqua.TAMS orientationTamaqua Area Middle School students and their parents will have the opportunity to attend a school orientation on Aug. 2, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Incoming sixth grade students, as well as students new to the district, are encouraged to attend by Principal Christopher Czapla. The evening will begin in the school auditorium. Information will be provided on student schedules and activities, facilities and discipline.Tours of the building will be available, accompanied by student guides. School supplies will be available.Homeroom assignments will be posted on the main door as of Aug. 2.Bethany VBSVacation Bible School will be held at Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church from July 19 through July 23. Registration will be held daily at 5:30 p.m., with sessions slated to begin at 6 p.m.The church is located at 223 E. Broad St. Sessions are available for children three years of age through grade 12. Phyllis Wolford will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. worship service this Sunday in St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. The service will be followed by a church picnic. Weather permitting, the picnic will be held in the garden. In case of rain, it will be held in the fellowship hall.Activities for next week will include: Monday, Worship and Music Committee meeting at 7 p.m.; Tuesday, Cemetery Committee meting at 7 p.m.; Thursday, August Messenger assembly at 1 p.m.
