Rachel Ingraham of Lehighton Area High School and Frank Hall of Palmerton Area High School were the recipients of scholastic awards given during the Charter dinner held by Bowmanstown-Parryville Lions Club at the Terrace Restaurant, Walnutport on June 7.

Rachel said she took a lot of academic work at Lehighton but also participated in sports and music. She intends to study neuroscience at Moravian College. Her parents are John and Betsy.Lion Larry Engle presented the scholarship.Hall was not present because of another commitment. His parents are Frank Sr. and Kitt Hall.Fifty-four members were in attendance, a pleasingly high turnout for a club with a total membership of 56.In addition to installing officers and celebrating the founding of the club they welcomed seven new members. District governor Robert Neumoyer and his wife Becky were on hand to help with the official duties.A special award was given to Norman Engle Jr. He slowly unwrapped a package and noted that it contained a Christmas box. The box was opened to reveal a white shirt that, upon closer examination, had a lot of pockets. Norman has tickets for various organizations that he is selling at any given time and he was told he could use a pocket for each organization he was helping. Shortly after, he said he had it all figured out which tickets would go in which pocket.The Neumoyers were each given a bottle of wine and Robert was given a check for his favorite Lions project - $100 for Feed the Hungry.Larry Engle sponsored Delano and Linda Swartz and Eugene and Lois Strohl for membership. Lion Earl Reabold sponsored Susan Fritz and Duane Hawk sponsored his wife Lisa who had been participating for years but never joined the club.Neumoyer said new members do not happen overnight. Sponsors have to ask people to join."I come to this club as a friend. It's like coming home, but sponsors work hard," he said. He urged the new members to "consider what you can do for the community."He said Lions are Knights of the Blind. They work to provide Leader Dogs, support eye research, have youth programs and help feed the hungry."Membership is a privilege," he said. "Lions do things people can't do alone."The Proud Lion award cards that each was given are a way to find out about Lions. It requires attendance at a board meeting and participation in a fundraiser."If I missed a meeting my sponsor called and asked why. Every member here should come up and shake their hands," said Neumoyer.As he named the new officers for induction, Neumoyer said the club was lucky to have an outgoing president like Duane Hawk who had nearly served two terms because he completed another person's term and then became president in his own right.Named were Lion Tamer Henry Altmose whose job is to keep the club in harmony. Tail Twister Duane Hawk is to provide fun at every meeting and make new members feel at home. The new board of directors consists of Marshall Andrew, Curtis Hunsicker, Quinton Snyder, Michael Hein, Ronald Engle and Joseph Herzog.Larry Engle is the membership chairman and will be helped by Emma and Richard Moyer. In actuality, Neumoyer said the entire club helps with membership.Earl Reabold is the first vice president, Bill Ravert is second vice president and Ray Nunemacher is third vice president."Miss President Incoming, keep these people busy. You can't do it all," Neumoyer said.The job of Wayne Engle as treasurer is to disburse funds at the direction of the board of directors.Ed Steigerwalt is the secretary with Kathy Nunemacher as his assistant.Neumoyer said they have had a long career and the records are always accurate.Jean Smith he introduced as the all-time first female president. She was a vice president for several years. "You've got a big job ahead of you. Keep your vice presidents busy. Don't be afraid to dream."Last but not least because he starts and finishes every meeting was Chaplain Burdell Steigerwalt."Everyone not an officer please rise. I want you to realize the installed officers cannot do it all. Remember your motto 'We serve,'" said Neumoyer.Larry Engle presented some awards. The first was Lion of the Year and Duane Hawk was the recipient. Hawk also received the President's award from Jean Smith."I couldn't have made it through two years if it hadn't been for you," Hawk said. "I started getting Lady Lions in the club eight years ago and now I enjoy seeing you take over."Smith said she has some big shoes to fill and if she does something wrong they should impeach her.The program ended with the benediction and "God Bless America."
