Marian claims diamond wins

Published May 22. 2010 09:00AM

Marian used strong pitching to take a pair of game from Palmerton on the diamond.

Andy Sherkness and Ryan Gimbi combined to toss a one-hitter as Marian rolled to a 9-1 non-league victory over Palmerton.

With the win, the Colts (14-6) appear to have locked down the 5th seed and a trip to 4th-seeded Tri-Valley for next week's District 11 Class A quarterfinals.

Sherkness went five innings and picked up the win, striking out four. Gimbi fanned three in two innings of relief.

Mark Stawick led the Marian offense with a single, a triple and two RBIs. Damian Gallagher also had two hits and two RBIs. Scott Nietz added two hits, Jim Stavinski had a hit and two RBIs, and both Sherkness and Gimbi both had a hit and knocked in a run.

For Palmerton (0-20), Tyler Svetik's fourth-inning single was the only hit.
