LVC sweeps Via

Published March 29. 2010 05:00PM

The 2009-10 high school basketball season officially ended Saturday with the crowning of the Class AAAA state champion. For most teams and players the season has been over for weeks.

That's one reason that several area players were happy for the opportunity to take the court one last time. Senior all stars from the Lehigh Valley Conference, Colonial League and Mountain Valley Conference took in the annual Via All Star Classic Super Sunday at Northampton Commmunity College, a four-game extravaganza and fundraiser for Via of the Lehigh Valley, which helps children and adults with disabilities.

"It's for a good cause and I'm happy to be out here with my teammate, Nick Pappas," said Northern Lehigh forward Evan Biegly, who played on the Colonial League boys team.

"It was a big honor," said Northwestern guard Kevin Oxley. "To be respected as one of the best players in your league means a lot. And coming out here and playing for a good cause, it was just a lot of fun."

The Colonial League all stars faced their counterparts from the Lehigh Valley Conference's western half along with Faith Christian. The Mountain Valley and Pius X senior all stars took on the LVC's eastern (Northampton County) teams and Phillipsburg.

The LVC West girls set the tone in the first game of the day, beating the Colonial League 83-40 in the first of four Super Sunday wins for the LVC all stars.

Playing without league MVP Sondrine Glovas, who missed the game because of a family vacation, the Colonial League team hung around for most of the half before the LVC took over in the second half. (Games were played in two 20-minute halves)

Central Catholic's Taylor Maldonado scored a game-high 14 points, while Salisbury's Caitlin Hrebik led the Colonial League with 13 points.

The LVC West boys jumped out to a 21-11 lead and took a 14-point lead into halftime. They maintained a double digit lead through the second half en route to a 108-88 win.

Parkland's Ryan Carlon had a game-high 21 points, including five three-pointers.

Catasauqua's Josh Case led the Colonial League with 16 points. Biegley scored six points, while Pappas had four. The two players were not only happy to get one more chance on the court as teammates, but they also enjoyed getting to know some of their former on-court adversaries.

"When you're playing against them you don't really like the kids, it's a rivalry," Pappas said. "But when you're on the same team it's totally different. They're nice kids."

The LVC East girls kept the sweep alive with a 91-83 win in the third game of the day. Easton's Alexia Grant led a balanced scoring effort with 12 points. East Stroudsburg South's Carly Gallagher was the high scorer for the day, dropping in 44 points.

The final contest saw the LVC East boys beat the MVC 129-116.

The game was tight up until half with both teams sharing the lead. In the second half, the LVC team was too strong and pulled away.

Lehighton's James Markley enjoyed the high scoring contest and was hapy to be teammates with some players that he'd battled over the years in several sports.

"They're the best kids in the conference," he said. "It was fun to see some names that I saw during the football season, and its good to fit some faces with the names,"
