Senior guards lead Wreckers over SV

Published February 03. 2010 05:00PM

Weatherly head boys' basketball Coach Ron Cann knows the value of having senior guards on his roster. What he may not know is how lucky he is having three solid senior guards on the floor.

Last night, the three-headed guard position for the Wreckers did an outstanding job in leading their squad to a 47-38 win over visiting Shenandoah Valley.

"Senior guards mean a lot," Cann mentioned afterwards. "They've been through wars and have gone through a lot to get where they're at, but they know what they're supposed to do on the floor and they did a great job tonight."

Recent 1,000-point scorer Keith Barna poured in 16 points, Nathan Pfeiffer totaled 15 and Brendan Rowan added 12 in the game. Of even more importance, they also only had seven turnovers in the game, and the three of them combined to go 10-13 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to preserve the lead, pull out the victory and move their record to 12-7 overall, 5-6 in the league.

"Our guards did well and came through tonight," Cann added. "They concentrated and made their free throws to come out with the 'W.'"

In a game that featured eight lead changes, it really did come down to the fourth quarter, as the locals outscored the Devils 14-8 in the last eight minutes.

Early on, it was a battle, as the teams dueled to a 16-14 Weatherly advantage. The Wreckers darted out to an 11-2 lead, only to see it dwindle to two. Barna's five and four from Pfeiffer provided the scoring.

In the second, Shenandoah (1-18) showed their resolve by taking a 21-18 lead with about five minutes before intermission. However, George Wallish's turn-around gave the Wreckers a 23-21 lead with 1:07 on the clock. A put-back with four seconds left tied things at the break.

In the third, the lead changed hands six times before Weatherly took a 33-30 lead heading into the final eight minutes. Five different players tallied points in the quarter for the locals.

Shenandoah cut the lead to one, 34-33 with five minutes to play on a Dan Merva charity toss. However, Pfeiffer made a nice driving bucket and Rowan's two conversions ballooned the lead and the Blue Devils couldn't get closer.

In the game, Barna also had 11 rebounds, four assists and six steals, while Rowan had four boards and Pfeiffer had three steals.

Josh Dombroski led the visitors with 12 points.

Shenandoah prevented the sweep with a 73-47 preliminary win with Weatherly's Brett Stallone scoring 15 points.
