A streaky shooter needs only a small spark in order to get started and once that spark is lit, certain doom seems inevitable for the opponent.

Such was the case last night, as Panther Valley's Abbey Whildin nailed three treys in the second frame to blow open a tie game and help the winners take a 13-point lead at intermission, on their way to a lopsided 65-41 win over Weatherly.

"When Abbey gets on a streak, she doesn't need much room to drop another three," Panther Valley head coach Josh Wank admitted after the game. "She's a momentum player and I think her defensive effort is what really got her going. She got some nice picks that led to some break aways and that gave her confidence in the other areas of her game."

Whildin finished with four steals to go along with her five rebounds. However, it was her game-high 20 points that did the most damage for her team, as she scored 15 of those points in the middle two frames. That is when PV turned a 11-9 lead at the end of the first quarter into a 51-30 lead at the end of three.

Whildin's teammate and inside presence, Trayvonda Rice was the other part of the one-two punch that delivered the knock out punch to the Lady Wreckers, as she fought off potential early foul trouble to amass 14 points and 13 rebounds in the contest.

"Tray (Rice) was extremely active on the boards all night," Wank commended. "She finds ways to get into the gaps of teams' zones and she has such soft hands around the basket, making her all the more harder to stop."

She had three put-backs off offensive rebounds early on and down the stretch, she worked the low blocks for easy lay-ups against the under-sized defenders. Along with teammate Sam Zlock (five points, seven rebounds), the two helped create a 28-16 rebound edge that aided them to the win.

"(Panther Valley) was out to hustle the entire game and I try to tell our players that they have to play the way they practice," Weatherly head coach Paul Hadzick mentioned. "We have a lot of great athletes on the team and I wish they would put out the same effort when it comes time for the games."

In a game that saw both sides struggle to maintain control of the ball, Weatherly seemed to be hurt more from their 25 turnovers in the game. Panther Valley committed twenty of their own in the four quarters. However it was an improvement from their 39 in their previous game.

Early on, both teams battled evenly, as the hosts managed to grab a 11-9 lead. Jamey Mikovich and Rice both scored four, as Weatherly got three from Erin Dougherty.

In the second, Whildin hit three long-distance jumpers to score nine in helping the winners to a 30-17 halftime lead.

A Sara Heister jumper and a Dominique Adamczyk lay-up cut into the lead, only to see PV go on a 17-4 run to balloon the lead to 47-25 with just over two minutes left in the third.

That run was highlighted by two threes from Macey Markovich and four points from Whildin.

Heister stopped the bleeding with a drive and Adamczyk hit a trey, but the damage seemed to be done, as the Lady Panthers took a 51-30 lead at the end of three.

If that didn't do enough, the victors went on a 12-0 run to begin the final quarter to seal things up, as they were up 63-30 before both teams went to their benches.

"We're going to try whatever we can to get a winning season this year," Weatherly's Hadzick mentioned. "We have a lot of things to work on and hopefully we can keep improving."

For Panther Valley, Coach Wank hopes to do the same. "We need to work on our free throws and get back to fundamentals," he said.

"We just haven't had time to practice since last Friday, because we've had games each night."

Weatherly got a team-high 10 points from Sara Heister, nine from Adamczyk and eight from Jess Polchin.

In the JV contest, Weatherly prevented the sweep with a 47-46 win, as Shelby Berger led with 18 points. PV's Macey Markovich had a game-high 20 in the losing effort.
