Free BP screening

Compassionate Care Hospice offers free blood pressure screenings from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., the fourth Friday of the month at the Chestnuthill Senior Center to center participants. The next screening is Friday, Feb. 24, at the center at Zion Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville.

Pantry needs

Effort UMC's Supplemental Family Resource Center is in need of canned tuna, chili, peas, macaroni and cheese, and clean to-be-recycled grocery bags. Volunteers will use those to fill with foodstuffs for hungry families.

Safe Haven Pet Rescue

Safe Haven Pet Rescue will have a volunteer meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 6:30 p.m., at Cherry's Restaurant, Route 209 near Route 534, Kresgeville. Safe Haven is a small group of dedicated animal advocates who rescue dogs from high-kill and overcrowded shelters and finds them loving homes. All dogs are in foster care until their permanent homes are found. Safe Haven has rescued over 500 dogs so far. Safe Haven always welcomes volunteers and foster families.

Ash Wednesday service with communion will be held at St. Matthew's UCC in Kunkletown on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 7:30 p.m.

Volunteers head to Missouri

The Volunteers in Mission from Effort UMC will be leaving for Joplin, Mo., this Saturday. Among the group is the Rev. Robin Fisher.

In her absence, the weekend's worship services will be led by Ken Edwards, a Candidate in Ministry, on Saturday, Feb. 18, and by the Rev. Bob Argot (ret.) during the three Sunday services, including the 8:30, 9:45 and 10:30 a.m. services, on Sunday, Feb. 19.

The 9:45 a.m. service is the monthly contemporary service.

Cornerstone Community Church

Cornerstone Community Church offers Sunday School at 9:30 a.m. for all ages, followed by their Worship Service at 10:45 a.m. Childcare is provided for nursery through preschool ages. Junior Worship for grades K-3 and Preteen Zone for grades 4-6; both begin at 10:45 a.m.

From Route 209 in Kresgeville, turn north at the light onto Burger Hollow Road. Turn left onto Polk Township Road. The church is located on the left, next to the PV Elementary School.

Slatington Lions Club

The Slatington Lions Club announced that Christmas Tree sales for 2011 were as follows: 675 trees purchased; 651 of which were sold, for a total profit in excess of $7,000. The combined time for sales was 754 hours.

Tree elves were Doug Heckman, Jack Follweiler, Les Glanz, Claude Fenstermaker and Mayor Walter Nidermeyer.

The club is grateful to the 24 members and all others who helped. This was huge benefit, since members did not have to work extended hours. More help is always needed.

Cub Scout Awards

On Sunday, Feb. 5, at our Lady Queen of Peace Church, the following Cub Scouts were recognized for having done the work to receive the listed religious emblems: Light of Christ Tyler Ewing; Parvuli Dei Jason Chatell, William Chechel, David Mondillo, Raymond Pasqua III and Charles Whyte II.

After the Mass, the Cubs were recognized at a social time and Cub Pack 98 presented Our Lady Queen of Peace with the 2012 charter.

Blood drive

There will be a blood drive at Getz Personal Care Home on Saturday, Feb. 18, from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. located on Route 534, Kunkletown. Free 2011 Halloween T-shirts will be given to all presenting donors.

Anti bullying

Guest Speaker Jim Tkach will be coming to Pleasant Valley Intermediate School to talk to parents and students about the effects that mental disorders, bullying, and depression can have on students' well-being. The parent program will be on Thursday, Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. in the PVI cafeteria.

All parents are invited to attend.

Addresses sought

Operation: Touch of Home is asking for help in getting names and addresses of area men and women who are serving in Afghanistan and other hostile areas to be recipients of the organization's Spring 2012 shipment of essentials.

Persons having such information are asked to contact touchofhome@hotmail.com. One may also download a form from the group's website and mail it to the organization at P.O. Box 162, Brodheadsville, PA 18322.

The monthly PTO meeting will be on Thursday, Jan. 26, at 7 p.m. in the library.

Polk PTO winter dance

The Polk PTO will hold its winter dance from 6 to 8 p.m., on Friday, Jan. 27. This year's theme is Sock Hop.

Crime watch

There will be a Polk Township crime watch meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 1, at 7 p.m., at the Polk Township Municipal Building, located on Polk Township Rd., next to the township recycling center.

All Polk Township residents are encouraged to attend.
