Indians sweep Palmerton

In the real world, the metaphorical David doesn't always beat Goliath.

Sure, it sometimes happens. But this wasn't the case Saturday when the newly formed Palmerton volleyball team faced the talented, experienced and likely district-bound Lehighton Indians. The Indians won easily, 25-11, 25-5, 25-7.In the second game, Lehighton's Emily Haberman served during a 17-point run, giving the Tribe a 17-2 lead.Late in the third game, with Lehighton ahead 14-7, senior Vanessa Ahner served for the 11 final points and had five consecutive aces. This is Palmerton's first season ever for volleyball and the inexperience was a major factor in the loss. In the jousts, the Indians always got the upper hand. Dinks were a problem all night for the Bombers. On-spot serving was a lethal weapon for Lehighton.Still, Palmerton coach Marsha Thomas had praise for her girls as well as their opponent."We're still on a big learning curve," she said. "This is our first year we had a volleyball team."The girls are improving every day in practice. We're putting a little bit more together. We're still raw, but we see some spurts where we look like a real volleyball team."Thomas said of the opponent, "Lehighton has a great program. I actually helped when Rachel Quinn coached here," noting she was a volunteer coach."I'm from Lehighton. My kids go to school here," she said. "I think Lehighton has a great program. TJ (Lehighton coach TJ O'Connor) has a great thing going here. I'm hoping to emulate that here."O'Connor was just a gracious in his complements to Thomas and the Palmerton squad."Hats off to Palmerton," he said. "They're doing a great job this year. I think Marsha's doing a phenomenal job in her first year. She's a great coach and they have a lot of hard-working kids. I think they'll have a successful program in the future."Saturday wasn't Palmerton's turn to meet that success, thanks especially to the Emily and Emily tandem.Emily Haberman, the setter, had 18 assists and 10 serving aces. Emily Miller, the middle, had nine of the team's 18 total kills.O'Connor said, "Getting a victory is always a good thing. I feel like all our girls pulled together. We executed our serves and our defense, we've been working on our hitters a lot more, and we got to do some of that today."We had some objectives we wanted to reach today. We tried not to worry about the score. We tried to worry about what we were executing and what we could improve on throughout the match, and I feel we improved from game one to game three."SOME STATS ... For Lehighton (6-2), Emily Haberman had all of the team's 18 assists, plus 10 aces. Emily Miller had nine kills. Vanessa Ahner had seven aces and four kills. Sarah Bradley had one ace and five kills. Lillian Brown had five digs. For Palmerton (0-5), Erica Messics had three server aces, two digs and two kills. Kayla Nothstein had three kills and one block. Maddison Beahm had two digs and one block.GREAT SPORTSMANSHIP ... It was great so see such good sportsmanship between the two teams despite the differences in ability. Both coaches showed great respect for each other after the match with Lehighton, which has a long tradition in volleyball, optimistic that Palmerton's program will become a success.
