No room: Beltzville closes after hitting capacity

Two Carbon County lakes maxed out their capacity Sunday afternoon, leading officials to temporarily close the parks to more visitors.

Beltzville State Park reopened around 3:15 Sunday afternoon after state police moved in and stopped allowing vehicles into the parking lots around noon.According to people on the scene, guests began leaving their cars and walking for miles to get in the park."It was a health and safety issue," park manager Devin Buzzard said of the decision to temporarily limit guests. "We opened it back up when we thought it was reasonable to do so."Mauch Chunk Lake Park in Jim Thorpe was also closed for a short period due to the high number of visitors. At 1:30 p.m., state troopers brought tow trucks to the scene, removing vehicles parked along Pohopoco Drive and adjoining roads. Some license plates were from as far away as Massachusetts. An employee of Schlier's Towing said they had towed 11 vehicles as of 3:45 p.m."We're not the only towing service out here though," he said. "The police call and everyone comes out. This is every year."After closing the park, police handcuffed one female who tried to gain access and removed another motorist who they believed to be impaired.By late afternoon, guests at Beltzville were having a good time but several expressed displeasure with the experience of getting to the park."It's unfortunate," said Damian Cavazos of Camden, New Jersey."We sat in traffic for over a half-hour. You know, you just want to come out and have a good time. You don't expect this kind of thing to happen."Down by the beach the music blared, smoke billowed from grills and children splashed in the water."We got here early and it was already packed but we don't care," said Santiago Lemus of Philadelphia. "We got here before things got really crazy and we're having a good time."People also took to social media to voice their opinion."I've been coming to this lake for about seven to eight years and I've never seen it this bad," said Johnny Santiago of Philadelphia on Facebook.
