Storms cause blackouts, flooding, property damage

A line of severe storms that surged through northeastern Pennsylvania late Wednesday evening wreaked havoc on local municipalities and put many residents in darkness.

The number of electricity customers without power grew as the night wore on and storms continued to pound the area.

According to an 8:30 p.m. report by the PPL Outage Center, 2,694 Carbon County customers were without power, along with 1,831 in Schuylkill County and 113 in Monroe. Two hours later, those numbers ballooned to 3,509 in Carbon, 1,910 in Schuylkill and 1,675 in Monroe.

At 2 a.m. Thursday, some 9,000 residents were still without power in the region, according to PPL.
