Moravian hands Lehighton loss

EMMAUS - The Lehighton field hockey team was well aware of who it was facing entering Tuesday night's District 11 Class 2A semifinal.

It didn't help matters though that top-seeded Moravian Academy was simply scratching to get back on the field of play after a bye week. It showed that this year's Colonial League champions were more than hungry to move one step further to the district title game. The fire in the Moravian Academy players' eyes glared bright, but their actions simply spoke louder than anything else as they went on to hand the No. 4-seeded Indians a 8-0 setback on the turf at Memorial Field. The Indians gave the Lions a run for their money until the winners went on to score three straight goals in a matter of 2:16 midway through the opening half. In fact, over the first 17 minutes of play, the Indians' defense held the Lions to a mere shot on goal.Soon however, Mayv Clune gave the Lions the spark they needed with a goal at the 13:00 mark. Teammate Ashley Pearce followed with a goal 1:14 later. After being credited with the assist on Clune's initial goal, Dana Turner then gave the Lions a 3-0 lead on a goal with 10:44 left until half. The Indians silenced the Lions' roar for awhile, but it wasn't long into the second half that Pearce scored another and then Clune went on for a second-half hat-trick.Katie Keller finished off the scoring with 10:28 left in the game, but that's all seasoned mentor Debbie Bross needed to explain the reasoning of her Lions' outrage in the district semis."We were ready to play," Gross said. "We had a layover here. We had a bye in the first round and we were just ready to play."Clune, went on finish with four goals and an assist. The Lions advanced and will take on Southern Lehigh, a 3-0 victor over Pen Argyl in Game One of the double-header at Emmaus, in this year's district championship. For the Indians, they all now know what it's going to take for the program to prevent yet another year off from the postseason."We know that if we work together we can get this far," said Lehighton coach Karen Wall, of what the Indians will take from this setback after getting back into districts after a one-year hiatus. "We had an off night tonight. We did. It is what it is. If they continue to play together, they know they can go far. It was a good effort put forth this year."BLANKED ... It was only the fifth time over Lehighton's 20 games this season that they were held without a goal. The Indians were shutout by Whitehall (6-0), Oley Valley (5-0), Parkland (8-0) and Stroudsburg (6-0) during the regular season.NUMERO UNO ...
