Winter's last gasp: Slick conditions caused crashes, road closures

Winter's final blast wreaked plenty of havoc Friday, causing multiple crashes and various highway closures.

The heavy, wet snowfall made road conditions treacherous, which resulted in area school districts calling for early dismissals.Several inches of snow blanketed roadways when spring officially arrived at 6:45 p.m. as the mere thought of seeing the cherry blossoms was the last thing on the minds of motorists, who instead found themselves caught in the cross hairs of winter's last stand.The scanner was bustling with activity by late morning, starting with a vehicle rollover with confinement just before 10:30 a.m. atop Kattners Mountain (Route 903).Just after 11 a.m., icy road conditions led to an accident at Meckesville Road in Albrightsville (Route 534).Also at around that time, Interstate 81 South in Schuylkill County was shut down.Just before 11:30 a.m., Route 93 in Nesquehoning was shut down following an accident on the Broad Mountain.In between, West Penn Township Police shut down Route 443 atop the Clamtown Hill due to a number of disabled tractor-trailers and a loaded Tamaqua Area School District bus.The bottom of Kattners Mountain was shut down just before noon amid a report of multiple vehicles stuck.A short while later, multiple crashes were reported on Interstate 80 West/East of the Pennsylvania Turnpike in the area of Dead Man's Curve.Just after 1:30 p.m. there was a report of a vehicle on its roof with entrapment on Interstate 80.There were four people, two of which were children, according to scanner reports.The Maury Road and Mansion House in Jim Thorpe were also shut down.In the Weatherly Area School District, bus # 3 and bus #7 were running late Friday afternoon.So, too, were buses in the Jim Thorpe Area School District, despite the fact the high school dismissed at 11 a.m.The elementary schools, L.B. Morris in Jim Thorpe and the Penn Kidder Campus in Albrightsville dismissed at 11:30 a.m. according to the district's web site.The district posted the following:"Please note that due to several accidents, none of which are school transportation-related, there are some road closures that are delaying the dismissal of all of the students. We will send updates via text, phone and website as to the status of the transportation schedule."As of 2:20 p.m. the district posted an update, which said that high school students were being dismissed at 2:20 p.m. with L.B. Morris students to be dismissed at 2:40 p.m.A bus was rear-ended by a car on Route 903 north of Bear Creek just after 3 p.m. Students on the bus were not injured.Students who were getting off the bus had minor abrasions.Snow parking confusion continues. Lehighton residents awakened this morning to find tickets on the front windshield of their vehicles.Many called the borough hall who said the tickets would be voided.A check on vehicles was conducted to see whether residents attempted to adhere to the borough's snow parking ordinance.
