Carbon prison population rises

Carbon County's prison population rose in July, officials said.

On Wednesday, Warden Timothy Fritz reported to Carbon County Prison Board members that the inmate population as that day was 192. The prison has 223 beds."In July we had a spike in population," he said. "We still have a little breathing room but hopefully things will start changing."Fritz said that there is not one reason as to why the influx of inmates over the releases are occurring, noting that people are coming in for a variety of reasons, from parole violations to DUIs.The inmate population has fluctuated over the year and has steadily increased over the past few years. In other matters, Fritz reported that there will be an increased in transports in the coming months, with one pregnant female inmate needing to go to a methadone clinic daily; and another male inmate needing dialysis three times a week.
