Karnish, Vermillion, Skripko seek award

The 2015 National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Schuylkill County Scholar Athlete Banquet will be held Sunday, April 12, at 5 p.m. at Hillcrest Hall, Minersville.

Among the Scholar-Athletes honored will be Christian Gosch of Blue Mountain, Corbin White of Mahanoy Area, Matthew Karnish of Marian, Thomas Moran of Minersville, Gino Dinicola of Nativity, Nathan Gadinski of North Schuylkill, Ethan Vermillion of Panther Valley, Scott Werner of Pine Grove, Aaron Mickonish of Pottsville, Ryan Fink of Schuylkill Haven, Nicholas Gurski of Shenandoah Valley, Trevor Scripko of Tamaqua, Hunter Harner of Tri-Valley and Cody Williams of Williams Valley.Below are the biographies of the local participants.MARIAN CATHOLICMATTHEW KARNISH - 5'9, 150 lbs. Wide receiver & defensive back. A two-year starter and four-year member of the Colts program, Matthew was an Anthracite Football League second team selection at defensive back and was selected to the 2014 SCFCA senior all-star north team. Considered an excellent teammate, Matthew helped push other players to become that much better. He was a four-year member of the basketball team and participated in track for three years. Matthew was a distinguished honors student who has completed Advanced Placement courses in calculus and English. He is a member of the National Honor and Spanish Honor Societies, the green club, student council and is a peer tutor. Matthew serves as the vice president of his class and has participated in the Men of Marian picnic and other sports camps. Ranked first in his class of 79 students, Matthew has been accepted to Villanova University and will major in engineering. Parents: Gary & Kristen Karnish, Nesquehoning.PANTHER VALLEYETHAN VERMILLION - 6'1, 160 lbs. Wide receiver & defensive end. A first-year member of the Panthers team, Ethan was considered a team player who was willing to do whatever it took to make his team better. He was a four-year member of the Panther Valley basketball team and also played two years on the baseball team. An honors student, Ethan ranks in the top 6 percent of his class and has completed advanced placement courses in calculus and chemistry. A member of the National Honor Society, Ethan also took part in student forum for four years and currently possesses the Life Rank as a member of the Boy Scouts of America, working toward the rank of Eagle Scout. Ethan is an altar server at St. Katharine Drexel Church and is a junior member of the Summit Hill Shade Tree Commission. He plans on attending the University of Pittsburgh to major in engineering. Parents: Dr. Richard & Dr. Jennifer Vermillion, Summit Hill.TAMAQUA AREATREVOR SKRIPKO - 5'10, 210 lbs. Fullback, tight end and linebacker. A three-year starter and four-year member of the Blue Raiders program, Trevor led his team in tackling in both his junior and senior years with 188 tackles. Because of it, he was twice named the Tamaqua Area linebacker of the year. Trevor was an Anthracite Football League first team selection at tight end and a second-team selection at linebacker. In 2014, he was selected to the SCFCA Dream Team at tight end and was named a Lehighton Times-News Area all star at tight end and linebacker. He was honored as the 2014 Capt. Jeffrey Bnosky Memorial Award recipient. He participated in basketball for three years and was a four-year member of the track and field team. An honors student, Trevor has been a four-year member of the Spanish National Honor Society and a two-year member of the Mathematics National Honor Society. He participated in the biology and drama clubs, and volunteered at the Tamaqua youth basketball camp and the Junior Raider Biddy Basketball Tournament. Ranked in the top 10 percent of his class, Trevor has completed advanced placement courses in European history and statistics, while tutoring in math. Trevor has been accepted to East Stroudsburg University. Parents: John & Patty Skripko, Brockton.
