Charges dismissed against Lansford robbery suspect

Two serious charges were dismissed and a lesser one filed on Wednesday against a Lansford man accused of robbing two teenagers.

Robert Lee Clifford III, 20, had been charged with criminal attempt-robbery, which is a felony, and simple assault, a misdemeanor. Those two charges were dropped and he was instead charged with disorderly conduct, which carries a fine of $100.A hearing had been scheduled Wednesday before District Judge Casimir Kosciolek of Lansford. The resolution to the case happened without the hearing being held.Clifford had been held at the Carbon County Correctional Facility since his arrest on Sept. 4 in lieu of bail set at 10 percent of $50,000.He was released as a result of Wednesday's district court action. The victims of the incident and family members of the victims were present for the proceedings and didn't publicly object to the proceedings. The two victims, a male age 16 and a female age 13, had identified Clifford as the perpetrator through a Facebook page. The teens told police they were walking in the area of West Abbott and Coal streets at 6:34 p.m. Sept. 2 when they were approached by a male who had exited the passenger side of a vehicle. The female was carrying a computer tablet when the man ordered her to give it to him. The robber brandished a long, wooden-handled object, which, according to the affidavit, was believed to be an ax or sledgehammer. The vehicle was being driven by a female, police said.Sgt. Jack Soberick of the Lansford Police Department was off-duty that evening, but heard a disturbance and followed the two teenagers who were running away. The following day, the victims arrived at the police station and reported they saw a Facebook profile of their attacker. The arresting officer, Jason A. Helmer of the Lansford Police Department, said in the affidavit, "While checking Clifford's profile (on Facebook), I observed a photograph of Clifford with his lower face covered with a black bandanna and he was wielding a hammer in the air."Helmer said the victims identified Clifford at the police station.
