(through Jan. 5)
(bout minimum: 5)
106 - 1. Kevan Gentile, Jim Thorpe, So. (12-0); 2. Baily Wehr, Northwestern, Fr. (8-8); 3. Colton Rex, Northern Lehigh, So. (6-5).
Notes - Gentile has wrestled extremely well to start the season after going 21-14 a year ago, with only three wins coming via forfeit. The sophomore has picked up four wins by way of pin and two by way of a major decision. There's not much separating Wehr and Rex. Wehr has only one victory via forfeit, which came in his most recent match. Prior to that, the freshman won three in a row, including two pins in under three minutes. Rex has also won his last three matches, two by forfeit. Three of Rex's wins have been of the forfeit variety this season. Northern Lehigh is scheduled to wrestle Northwestern on January 13th, which could allow Wehr and Rex to separate themselves.
113 - 1. Lenny Ogozalek, Panther Valley, Sr. (18-2); 2. Quentin Bernhard, Northwestern, So. (12-7); 3. Ezra Neff, Lehighton, Fr. (5-5).
Honorable Mention - Jason Jacobi, Pleasant Valley, So. (6-6).
Notes - Ogozalek picked up his 100th win this past weekend at the Anthracite Duals and now sits at 101 career victories. In addition to going 5-0 over the weekend, Ogozalek has won his last nine matches. His last loss came against West Chester Henderson's Kyle Medrow, who is 18-2 this season. Ogozalek was 31-8 and a district semifinalist before getting injured last season. Bernhard has won his last four matches with pins, and five of his last six in that manner. Much like Ogozalek and Bernhard, Neff has also been on a roll lately, going 4-1 at the Anthracite Duals, with three pins by fall and one by way of forfeit.
120 - 1. Kenny Yanovich, Pleasant Valley, Sr. (12-2); 2. Tanner McHugh, Tamaqua, Fr. (12-4); 3. Darren Goida, Panther Valley, So. (11-4).
Honorable Mention - Zach Kemmerer, Lehighton, So. (11-6); Ryan Dengler, Northwestern, Fr. (9-4).
Notes - Yanovich, 35-6 and a state qualifier a year ago, has won his last four matches, three by fall. The senior also picked up a medal at the Bethlehem Holiday Classic earlier this season. Two of McHugh's three losses have come to senior and Northeast Regional champion Ethan Calkins of Troy. Both were regular decision losses, 1-0 and 5-2, respectively. McHugh was also a District 11 junior high bronze medalist last year. Goida, 25-15 last season, picked up a 9-2 decision victory over Kemmerer this past weekend at the Anthracite Duals, where the sophomore went 3-2 over the weekend. Dengler got off to a fast start, going 7-1 in his first eight matches, but has slowed since. The freshman is 2-3 in his last five matches.
126 - 1. Colin Mashack, Tamaqua, Sr. (9-1); 2. Matt Schmall, Northern Lehigh, So. (10-4); 3. Tegan Durishin, Lehighton, So. (10-5).
Honorable Mention - Jarrett White, Northwestern, So. (11-9); Anthony McCue, Pleasant Valley, So. (6-6).
Notes - All nine of Machack's wins have come by fall. His sole loss came against Zack LaBarron of Warrior Run after injuring his shoulder and prior to the match being stopped. The talented semior is currently ranked 4th at 126 pounds in Class AA by PA Power Wrestling Rankings. Mashack was 23-0 and a district champ last year before an injury at regionals ended his season. Schmall has won his last four matches with no forfeit victories this season. Durishin, 28-7 last season, wrestled well at this past weekend's Anthracite Duals, going 5-0. White, a regional qualifier a year, has faced stiff competition so far this season, with all losses coming to opponents with records of .500 or better.
132 - 1. Dylan Rynkiewicz, Tamaqua, Jr. (13-2); 2. Ali Capobianco, Jim Thorpe, So. (12-3); 3. Andrew Ringler, Palmerton, Fr. (4-3).
Notes - Seven of Rynkiewicz's victories have come by fall or tech fall. The junior's two losses came to Kobe Gelatin of Montgomery (NE Reg. 4th place) and Kent Lane of Southern Columbia, who placed 6th at the PIAA Championships last year. Capobianco, who was 21-11 last year, is 11-1 in his last 12 matches, with the loss coming to Bangor's Robert Lindsay, who is 14-2 this season. Ringler performed well at the Anthracite Duals over the weekend, going 4-1.
138 - 1. Josh Evans, Palmerton, Sr. (12-3); 2. Ryan Farber, Northern Lehigh, Fr. (12-3); 3. Hunter Davidyock, Panther Valley, Jr. (10-9).
Notes - Evans picked up his 100th win over the weekend at the Anthracite Duals and went 5-0 at the tournament. Evans' lone loss this season came to Nazareth's Chase Zemenak, who is 13-3 this year. The senior has also picked up wins over Pen Argyl's Andrew Sutton and Tri Valley's Chase Schaeffer, both state qualifiers a year ago. Evans also won a silver medal at the Bethlehem Holiday Classic earlier this year. Farber has performed well as a freshman, with his three losses coming to opponents with a combined record of 33-8.
145 - 1. Anthony Farano, Lehighton, Sr. (8-5); 2. Antonio Madera, Jim Thorpe, Fr. (8-6); 3. Cole Moyer, Northwestern, Fr. (5-5).
Notes - Farano went 3-2 at the Anthracite Duals over the weekend. The senior has five wins this season by fall. Madera, a freshman, was a District 11 junior high runner-up and will look to provide a boost to a Jim Thorpe roster that features only two seniors and no juniors. Madera is 5-2 in his last seven matches and has shown he can go the distance in his bouts.
152 - 1. Zack Christman, Palmerton, Jr. (14-3); 2. Garrett Gouger, Pleasant Valley, So. (9-5); 3. Zach Turner, Panther Valley, Jr. (5-5).
Notes - Christman has started strong this season. The junior went 4-1 at the Anthracite Duals over the weekend and picked up a silver medal in the Bethlehem Holiday Classic earlier this season. Gouger is 3-1 in his last four matches, picking up wins by pin, major decision and tech fall during that span. Three of Turner's wins this season have come by fall, with only one coming by forfeit.
160 - 1. Nate Farber, Northern Lehigh, Jr. (8-5); 2. Tyler Cann, Lehighton, So. (11-5); 3. Jared Mooney, Palmerton, Fr. (7-3).
Honorable Mention - Pollux Fisher, Jim Thorpe, Jr. (3-3).
Notes - Farber, who won 19 matches last season, has picked up two decision victories over Cann this season, 7-4 and 6-0, respectively. Cann has struggled since a 7-1 start to the season, going 4-4 since. Mooney has bounced around for the Bombers this season, starting the year at 160 pounds while also competing at 170 and 182 pounds. Mooney is 4-2 at 160, 1-1 at 170 and 2-0 at 182.
170 - 1. Zach Graver, Palmerton, Jr. (10-1); 2. Matt Buss, Panther Valley, Jr. (9-7); 3. Brody Keefe, Pleasant Valley, So. (8-5).
Honorable Mention - Austin Arnold, Northern Lehigh, Jr. (7-6).
Notes - Graver (31-9) is a returning state qualifier and has only shown improvement so far this season. The talented junior earned a silver medal in the Bethlehem Holiday Classic on his way to a fast start. Buss, 21-17 last year, went 3-2 at the Anthracite Duals on Saturday and is 5-2 in his last seven matches. Keefe has performed well recently, going 3-1 in his last four matches. Seven of the sophomore's wins have come via pin. Five of Arnold's wins this season have come by fall.
182 - 1. Connor Frey, Lehighton, So. (13-3); 2. Kyle Oliphant, Tamaqua, So. (11-3); 3. Dylan Moyer, Panther Valley, So. (11-8).
Honorable Mention - Matt Wolfe, Palmerton, Jr. (7-5); Greg Palmer, Jim Thorpe, So. (7-7).
Notes - Frey, 29-11 and a regional qualifier last year, has picked up where he left off. The sophomore went 5-0 at the Anthracite Duals and also earned a medal at this year's Bethlehem Holiday Classic. Nine of Oliphant's wins have come by fall this season. Moyer was 26-18 last season and looks to be on track for another solid year early on, going 4-2 in his last six matches. Moyer has picked up seven pinfall victories this season.
195 - 1. Richard Nase, Panther Valley, Sr. (11-1).
Notes - Nase was 28-13 and a regional qualifier a year ago, and there's little reason to believe he'll slow down this season. Nase, who went 5-0 at the Anthracite Duals, has seven wins by fall and only two by forfeit. The senior is 8-0 at 195 pounds and 3-1 at 220.
220 - 1. Rian Shubeck, Panther Valley, Jr. (13-3); 2. Nicholas Ammirato, Pleasant Valley, Jr. (4-2).
Notes - Shubeck (35-5) was a regional qualifier last season. The junior's three losses this season have come to opponents with a combined 25-10 record. Shubeck has won three matches via fall this season that ended in the first round. Ammirato is 2-1 this season at 220 pounds and 2-1 at 285.
285 - 1. Cameron Kates, Northern Lehigh, So. (10-6); 2. Lukas Mika, Panther Valley, So. (8-6); 3. Alex Raub, Palmerton, Sr. (7-4).
Notes - Three of Kates' five pins this season have come in the first round and the sophomore has only one forfeit victory this season. Mika did well at his home tournament over the weekend, posting a 4-1 mark. Seven of the sophomore's eight wins this season have come by fall. Raub, a newcomer to the Bombers this year, has stepped in and filled a major void at heavyweight. Only two of the senior's wins have come via forfeit this season. Raub's presence gives Palmerton a force at heavyweight, an asset the Bombers will need moving forward this year.
