Lehighton Police chief given pact

Lehighton's police chief has a new contract in place.

By a unanimous measure, borough council on Monday unanimously approved an employment agreement with borough Police Chief Brian Biechy.Per the agreement, Biechy will receive an annual salary of $72,800, effective Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2015.Biechy has been police chief since Dec. 21, 2013. At that time, he succeeded Scott Prebosnyak, who was serving as the officer in charge.At that time, council sought applications for the police chief position, but Prebosnyak indicated he wasn't interested.Officer promotedto corporalIn another police-related matter, council agreed to promote Prebosnyak as working corporal, with a one-year probation period.That action comes after council agreed last month to table the police civil service commission corporal exam results.Two apply forassistant fire chiefAlso on Monday, council announced that two candidates have applied for the borough's assistant fire chief position.The council agreed to have the two candidates interview with borough Manager Nicole Beckett and Councilman John Kreitz.After the meeting, Beckett said the candidates are Michael Mriss and Douglas Nothstein.Last month, council agreed to advertise for an assistant fire chief internally.That action was necessary after council appointed Patrick Mriss as the borough's new fire chief, effective Dec. 31.Mriss is currently assistant fire chief, and has been with the Lehighton Fire Department since June 1997.Also at that time, council accepted the resignation of incumbent Fire Chief Gary Frable, effective Jan. 1.Frable was appointed chief on May 9, 2011.He took over the position from former Fire Chief John "Jack" Kuller, who passed away on April 22, 2011.Frable had served as assistant chief under Kuller from 2002 until his ascension to the top post.In other business, council adopted a resolution to set the 2015 rate of contribution to the Police Pension Fund.
