Retired Lehighton educator elected school board president

Following the November elections, Lehighton Area School Board held a reorganizational meeting Monday evening.

Incumbents William Hill Jr. and Hal Resh joined newcomers Gloria Bowman, a retired Lehighton Area School District educator, and retired LASD groundskeeper Stephen Holland, in taking the oath of office to each serve four-year terms on the school board.After the four school board directors were officially sworn into office, Bowman was elected to serve as school board president by a five-to-four vote.Voting in favor of Bowman were Bowman, Holland, Larry Stern, Wayne Wentz, and Andrew Yenser.Rocky Ahner, Hill, Resh, and Thomas Zimmerman voted in favor of Ahner, the former school board president, who served two years in that position.In addition to thanking her fellow school board directors for their vote of confidence, Bowman said, "I want to thank Rocky (Ahner) for his leadership the past two years. Together, let's move forward from here."Also by a five-to-four vote, Resh was re-elected to serve as board vice president.Voting in favor of Resh were Ahner, Hill, Holland, Resh, and Zimmerman. Bowman, Stern, Wentz, and Yenser voted in favor of Stern.As newly-elected school board president, Bowman deferred committee appointments until she has more time to discuss the matter with her fellow directors.Ahner was unanimously elected to serve as alternate representative to Carbon Career and Technical Institute Joint Operating Committee.Acknowledging departing school board directors John Finnegan and Dave Krause, LASD Superintendent Jonathan J. Cleaver said, "I would like to thank these two individuals for their dedication to improving the education of the school district. They have given their time and talents to improving our students' educational environment and the entire Lehighton community."In other business, the school board approved Alison Rheinhardt as long-term substitute special education teacher for the second semester of the 2013-2014 school year and Jerilynn Derhammer as part-time cleaner at Mahoning Elementary School.The school board also acknowledged special education teacher Samantha Kistler to complete her special education supervisor internship through Bloomsburg University, under the supervision of LASD Special Services Supervisor Sean LeDonne.Lehighton Area School Board has scheduled a workshop meeting for 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9 at LASD Administration Building, Conference Room A.
