Bernice Solt, a resident at the Village at Palmerton, celebrated her 95th birthday on Dec. 2.

Originally from Emerald, and later Slatington, Bernice says she is staying young at The Village by staying active.She plays Scrabble almost every day, reads the daily newspaper, plays bingo and likes word games twice a week. She participates in hymn sings, crafts, lunch trips and other events.She is also a Phillies fan who favors Roy Halladay and, like many others, was disappointed that the Phillies didn't make the post season.Whenever you talk with Bernice, she always has a "good" answer for everything. When she was told, "You don't look 95," her reply was, "Well, what is 95 supposed to look like?"Bernice has great stories, too.In 1959 she took the bus to Allentown, to see about a job delivering phone books for extra money at Christmas time. The bus driver dropped her off an hour earlier than her interview, so to kill some time she went into Hess' Department Store.While there she was at the jewelry counter and found many nice things to buy and chatted with the manager. She came out of the store in time for her interview, but no longer needed it. She left Hess' with a job selling jewelry.She worked at the Hess jewelry counter for 24 years before retiring in 1983."How wonderful," she says. "I owe that bus driver a great thank you!"Bernice is also thankful for the family she has. She has three daughters: Harriet Felguieras and Kathy Kemp of Slatington, Sharla Kistler of Schnecksville, and a son Harrison of Gales Ferry, Conn. She also has nine grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
