McAdoo speaks out against progress

Dear Editor:

McAdoo officials are raising questions about a low impact natural gas pipeline that is under construction to provide the Altadis

U.S.A. plant with a clean source of energy. Unfortunately McAdoo borough officials are trying to stop the project simply because two water lines had been accidentally struck.Basically local government officials are elected to help the community in making choices. Let's examine a few of the recent choices by McAdoo officials. On one hand we have a recent sewer construction project that resulted in over 600 technical blasting violations. There were over 100 damaged homes. There could be more but McAdoo officials never bothered to inform homeowners' to inspect for damage; looking the other way.The sewer project destroyed our roads forcing residents to live in conditions comparable to poverty stricken third world nations. On that same hand is the dumping of coal fly ash turning our community into one giant industrial trash can. These trucks roll through McAdoo nonstop every day while destroying our roads and polluting our town with toxic waste.Take a ride through McAdoo and look at the homes along route 309 then take a look at the filthy street. Nothing is said about this possibly because of local ties to the coal industry with McAdoo government. On the other hand we have Altadis that is trying to make their plant more efficient and safer for the environment and McAdoo officials want to shut the project down. Why? Filthy streets and around the clock dumping of pollution on one hand; cleaner air for the local residents on the other and McAdoo officials have a problem; sounds like corruption to me.Hopefully McAdoo officials will stop the same nonsense that has made our community the local joke of the Hazleton area. Let's start with the big problems that are affecting the lives of McAdoo residents' and when you are finished you can devote all of your resources to the two broken water lines.Reminds me of an old parable; don't worry about the splinter in your neighbor's eye when you have a rafter sticking out of yours!Steven DreyerMcAdoo
