Two facing drug, other counts after chase

Two Carbon County residents are facing charges following a chase that began in Summit Hill and ended in Penn Forest Township.

Summit Hill police reported at 10:44 p.m. on Feb. 13, officers were monitoring traffic along Route 902 near the Valero service station when they saw a black Mitsubishi Eclipse eastbound with an excessively loud exhaust and an equipment violation. A traffic stop was attempted but the driver refused to stop.

Police chased the car on East White Bear Drive with speeds increasing. The pursuit continued eastbound into Jim Thorpe, down Broadway.

A Jim Thorpe police unit was at the intersection of Hazard Square stopping traffic for safety reasons. The Mitsubishi continued through the red light at Broadway and Susquehanna and onto Route 209 northbound. The pursuit continued on 209 with the fleeing vehicle passing another vehicle illegally.

The pursuit then went onto Route 903 northbound, with the fleeing vehicle again passing another vehicle illegally near North Street and 13th Street. The vehicle then turned left onto White Birch Drive in the Bear Creek Lakes development where the driver jumped out of the vehicle and ran away.

Police said during the pursuit on White Bear Drive an interior light was turned on and two occupants were observed.

The passenger was identified as Wayne A. Vasiliou, 31, of West Bertsch Street, Lansford.

Vasiliou admitted he had narcotics in the vehicle. Police found he had narcotics including methamphetamine and heroin.

Vasiliou also identified the driver as Jeremy Scott Rawlins, 31, of East Kline Avenue, Lansford.

Rawlins was located the next day and taken into custody. He also waived his rights and admitted operating the fleeing vehicle and said he fled because there were drugs in the vehicle.

As a result of the investigation, Rawlins has been charged with fleeing or attempting to elude police, possession of a controlled substance (heroin), possession of drug paraphernalia, driving under suspension, careless driving, reckless driving and vehicle violations.

Vasiliou has been charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Jim Thorpe, Franklin Township and Kidder Township police departments assisted Summit Hill police.
