Schuylkill County plans fall cleanup

Schuylkill County commissioners are putting the final touches on the annual Fall Clean-up.

The clean-up, sponsored by the commissioners and the state Department of Environmental Protection, will be held Sept. 10-21.

The event will collect scrap metal, old tires, appliances and bulky items.

Proof of county residency must be provided.

There will be no electronics collected this year. Also, household hazardous waste such as paints, solvents, cleaners and poisons will not be accepted.

Call the county Office of Solid Waste at 570-628-1220 for collection details, including dates, times and places.

The week of Sept. 10, bulky items, tires, and scrap metal will be collected in Schuylkill Haven; at CES Landfill; Pottsville; Ringtown; North Manheim, Mahanoy, Pine Grove and Branch townships.

The week of Sept. 17, items will be collected at the Tamaqua Transfer Station, Sewage Plant Road, 570-668-4515. Collection dates and times are 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m Monday Sept. 17 through Friday Sept. 21 and from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday Sept. 22.

For New Ringgold, Community Fire Company, 25 N. Railroad St., 570-640-5455. Collections dates and times are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday Sept. 22.

Collections will also be held that week in Minersville, Girardville, Porter Township, Hegins, Wayne Township and Tremont. Last week, commissioners approved a number of contracts for the collection of refuse.

Commissioners also approved fees to be charged for those items accepted.

Tires: only automobile, light truck, and motorcycle/RV tires up to 16-inch diameter are accepted. The fee is $2 per tire without rims and $3 per tire with rims. There is a limit of 10 tires per load and no more than two loads per customer will be accepted.

Municipalities will also be charged the per tire fee and are requested to make an appointment with the host collection site for large loads.

Appliances: Freon bearing (air conditioners, refrigerators, and dehumidifiers), $10 each.

Non-freon bearing and scrap metal (stoves, washers, dryers, water heaters, bicycles, barbecue grills, metal furniture), no charge.

Bulky items (mattresses, box springs, rolls of carpet, doors and windows), $10 each.

Sofas and overstuffed chairs are $5 per cushion (for example, a love seat that has two cushions would be $10).
