Nesquehoning council discusses snow plowing following storm

The recent winter storm that dropped snow, sleet and freezing rain over the area had Nesquehoning Borough Council members talking.

During council’s workshop on Wednesday, council members discussed plowing, the snow ordinance and the borough vehicles.

Mayor Sam Kitchko said that he received two compliments on the plowing during this storm.

Councilman Frank Jacobs said that it seemed most people were doing good at moving their cars according to the snow ordinance on Tuesday, but were not as consistent on Wednesday.

That’s because the storm wasn’t considered a storm by the borough’s definition for curb-to-curb plowing, borough secretary RoniSue Ahner said, meaning that borough crews weren’t really clearing the full street, police weren’t issuing tickets and residents weren’t required to move, even though moving meant crews could plow closer to the curb.

“If you move then they can plow,” Kitchko said. “If you don’t move, they can’t plow.”

Council said that there were some issues, including some broken plow equipment and scheduling that needs to be addressed during negotiations with the borough crew that will be taking place in the coming months.

No action was taken on any matter because workshops are held for discussion purposes only in preparation of council’s monthly meeting, which will be held at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 27.
