Mary Martha Kunkle-Heckman celebrates 100 years

Mary Martha Kunkle-Heckman, a lifelong resident of Slatington, is celebrating her 100th birthday.

She was born in Slatington on July 25, 1918, to Frances and Carrie (Benninger) Kunkle. She has one brother, David Kunkle.

Mary married Arlington Elwood Heckman on April 29, 1939. They were married for 62 years until his passing in March 2001.

She worked at Seiler Mills in Walnutport for a short period, and at Rea & Derick Drug Store in Whitehall for 21 years.

Mary and Arlington had two children.

Her daughter, Marilee Ann Heckman, is married to Carl Oplinger. They have two children: Ann Oplinger and Amy Oplinger-Lewerenz, who is married to Thomas Lewerenz. They have two children, William Arlington and Meredith.

Her son, Douglas Elwood Heckman, has one son, Darrin Douglas Heckman, who is married to Carol Bear. They have two children: a son, Matthew Stirling, who is married to Irene (Chen), and who has twin boys, Russell and Griffith; and a daughter, Rachel Stirling.

The family will celebrate Mary’s 100th birthday on Saturday at her home in Slatington.
