Marchalk slaying trial begins Monday

The trial of Michael D. Marchalk, who has admitted to beating to death his father, well-known Schuylkill County lawyer Gary D. Marchalk on Father’s Day 2017, is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Monday before Schuylkill County President Judge William E. Baldwin.

Marchalk, 38, who remains in the county jail without bail, plans to continue to represent himself, with help from Assistant Public Defender Andrea L. Thompson.

Deputy Attorney General Rebecca A. Elo and Senior Deputy Attorney General Christopher P. Phillips will prosecute.

Marchalk faces charges of criminal homicide, murder of the first degree, murder of the second degree, murder of the third degree, voluntary manslaughter, aggravated assault, robbery, theft, theft of a motor vehicle, access device fraud and recklessly endangering another person.

State troopers testified at a July 20 hearing that Marchalk told them he used an aluminum baseball bat to bludgeon his father to death after an argument on June 18, 2017, at the family home at 21 Pear St., Barnesville.

Marchalk was staying there, with plans to enroll in a drug rehab program the next morning.

But after his father refused to give him money for heroin so he “wouldn’t get sick at rehab,” according to court documents and testimony, Marchalk beat his father, 60, to death with the bat.

Marchalk then took his father’s wallet and car, drove to Philadelphia, and from there traveled by bus to Atlantic City, where he was caught by police on June 23.

Marchalk’s brother Matthew discovered their father’s body the morning of June 19 after he failed to answer texts on Father’s Day and didn’t show up at a hearing on the morning of June 19.
