Juvenile community service program helps nonprofits

Are you a nonprofit organization who needs a few extra hands completing a project?

The Carbon County Juvenile Probation office has a program that may be able to help not only the nonprofit, but the juveniles working to complete their sentences.

The Carbon County Juvenile Probation Community Service program provides assistance to local nonprofits, while satisfying a juvenile defendant’s court-ordered community service hours.

Chief Juvenile Probation Officer Jim Dodson said that the program receives numerous requests from those in the community who would benefit from their service, whether it be a road cleanup, food drive or festival setup.

“Whatever a nonprofit needs, we will help them out,” he said.

Organized events are then created so that the project can be completed in a safe and monitored manner.

The program also offers those who are unable to pay for the cost of damage reimbursement agreed upon in their sentencing the opportunity to do so.

Once participants have completed their required community service hours, they are able to continue on with the program while earning a minimum wage, which goes directly toward the fulfillment of their court costs and damage reimbursement dues.

The community service program is very popular, Dodson said, noting that the schedule for projects for the summer is pretty much booked. Organizations can still call to set up a project for the future.

“We ask that they call at least two to three weeks ahead because we are so booked,” he said.
