Jim Thorpe man facing state prison term after guilty pleas

A Jim Thorpe man was told on Tuesday he faces a state prison term when he is sentenced after entering guilty pleas in Carbon County court in four pending criminal cases.

Michael Dennis, 32, appeared before Judge Joseph J. Matika to plea to counts of criminal trespass, a felony, possession of a controlled substance, receiving stolen property, obstruction in the administration of law and a summary offense of driving under suspension, DUI related.

Matika told Dennis, who is an inmate in the county prison on the charges, he a faces a prison term, in the standard range, of between 12 and 18 months on the trespass count.

“That is a state sentence,” Matika told him.

Dennis was charged with the obstruction count for an incident on Jan. 16 filed by Jim Thorpe police when he was found in a garage in the area of Walnut Avenue and School Alley. The trespass count stems from an incident on Feb. 5, 2018, at a home along South Street in Jim Thorpe. In that case the commonwealth agreed to drop a burglary charge. The receiving count stems from an incident on April 19, 2018, filed by Mahoning Township police.

Matika deferred sentencing and ordered the adult probation office to prepare a presentence investigation report.
