Carbon warden says drug treatment court having positive effect

Carbon County’s warden said the prison may be starting to see some of the positive effects from the county’s new drug treatment court.

On Wednesday, Warden Timothy Fritz told the county prison board that as of that day there were 238 inmates in-house. Of that total, 44 were women.

He noted the total showing slight decreases in the number of inmates and said it could be due to the drug treatment court, which aims to keep some charged out of jail and into treatment programs while going through the court system to complete a vigorous program.

In other matters, the warden reporter on three additional items in the jail.

• The new security camera project is nearing completion. All wiring has been done and about half of the new security cameras have been installed. The project is expected to be finished by the end of next week.

• Three water heaters are leaking and staff has been having problems with them. The board asked that the project specs be drawn up and the replacement of the three water heaters be put out for bid as soon as possible.

• Half of the jail’s intercom system is not working properly, causing some issues with staff being able to communicate in the building. Fritz said that it is original to the building and is obsolete since parts cannot be found to repair it. He provided a quote to replace half the system, and the board asked to also get a quote to replace the whole intercom system in phases.
