Prothonotary’s report

A total of 829 cases were started in September in the office of Carbon County Prothonotary Joann M. Behrens, according to a monthly statistical report released by the officeholder. A breakdown of cases is as follows:

Civil actions, 39; custody complaints, 28; complaints to modify custody, 11; district justice appeals, 9; declaratory judgment, 1; divorce complaints, 11; complaints in ejectment, 4; eminent domain/declaration of taking, 1; license appeals, 4; mortgage foreclosure complaints, 13; complaint in partition, 1; name change petitions, 2; protection from abuse petitions, 32; protection from sexually violent individual petitions, 2; tax sale, 1; zoning appeal, 1; judgments, 633; miscellaneous cases, 4; paternity suit, 1; stipulations/waivers of liens, 9; and writs of executions, 22. The office also processed 53 passport applications and assisted the public with 41 passport renewal applications.

Behrens’ financial report for September shows $48,162.10 was generated as follows: prothonotary’s fees, $36,777.73; interest income, $5.85; custody/divorce fee, $2,080; PFA Surcharge, Sheriff; $25; PFA Surcharge, Courts, $25; data processing fees, $8,887.02; stenographer fees, $361.50; and remote access fees, $1,800.

The prothonotary also remitted $4,270.80 to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Revenue, representing state fees collected locally, and $34 to the Administrative Offices of the Pennsylvania Courts, this being surcharges on new custody cases in accordance with Act 119 of 1996. Another $2,875 was deposited in the Prothonotary’s Automation Fund for future use in automating the office.
