Jim Thorpe Area School Board raises lunch prices

School lunch prices for 2015-16 were approved at Monday night's Jim Thorpe Area School Board meeting.

On a 6-3 vote, the board approved increasing prices by 10 cents, putting elementary lunches at $2.35 and secondary lunches at $2.60.Voting yes were President Dennis McGinley, Vice President Robert Schaninger, treasurer John Ciavarella, William Allison, Pearl Downs-Sheckler and Michael Principe. Glenn Confer, Gerald Strubinger and Walter Schulz voted no.After the board approved the purchase of two new wrestling mats and a football sled at a total cost of $17,500, Confer took issue with the need to raise lunch prices."We have money for everything under the sun," Confer said. "Everybody's struggling today. ... And we want to beat them up on a lunch price? I will never vote for an increase in lunch prices. We owe that to these kids."In other matters, the board acted on the following items:• Approve Walter Schulz as Jim Thorpe Area School District Representative to CLIU 21 board of directors.• Accept resignation of Laura Parrish and Susan Rotolo, paraprofessionals.• Approve Transportation, Budget and Finance and Curriculum Committee meetings for April 27.• Approve re-advertisement for solicitation of bids for a school van as a result of no bids received.• Approve high school graduation date of June 11.• Approve Donation to Jim Thorpe Summer Recreation Program of $3,500.• Approve student Rotarians for the month of April: Johnathan Condly and Christopher Trovato.• Approve April Students of the Month: Javed Hayles, German; Kayla Stone, Spanish.In addition, the board also acknowledged the chess team, which had five students participate in the state chess championships. The team finished second in its division. Matt Miller was co-champion of his division, tying for first place. Dana Rodriguez took fourth place in the unrated division, meant for new players. Other members of the team were Erin Kelly, Brittany Marzen and Lauren Hill.
