A construction project converting the swimming pool at Panther Valley High School into classroom space could be completed by May 2015.
The project will cost an estimated $5.6 to $5.8 million. An update on the project was given to the Building and Grounds Committee of the school board Wednesday night by two representatives of the project architect, "The Architectural Studio" of Emmaus.Curtis D. Santee, principal for the Architectural Studio, outlined the schedule:• March 7 - Project goes out on bids.• March 25 - Pre-bid meeting.• April 10 - Bid opening.• April 24 - Approval of bids.• Mid May - Notice to proceed with construction. The construction is expected to take a year.Classes could begin in the new set-up for the 2015-16 school year.Part of the project involves restructuring the classes.Grades kindergarten through third will remain at the present Nesquehoning Elementary School.Grades 4-6 will relocate to the present middle school.Grades 7-8 will occupy the new space where the pool is now located.Board President Jeff Markovich said any members of the public who have questions about the project are encouraged to attend the next meeting of the school board at 7 p.m. on Feb. 27."I'm excited about this," said Bill Hunsicker, chairperson of the Building and Grounds Committee, adding that it will relieve the crowded conditions at the elementary school.Board member Michelle Markovich agreed, stating, "I think we are being responsible to the taxpayers."Also present for the Architectural Studio was Andrew R. Alicandri, associate principal of the firm. It was noted that Alicandri was involved with the stadium project and toilet replacement project for the district.Superintendent Rosemary Porembo said that having the project completed in May will allow time to make the conversion of classes without disrupting the school schedule.Santee urged the board to begin the process of hiring a clerk of the works to oversee the project construction.Board member John Williams offered to serve as clerk of the works on a volunteer basis.Other members said they must first check with the board's solicitor, Attorney Robert Yurichak, to determine if a conflict-of-interest might exist. They also said they will interview candidates for the position.Potential alternative items which could receive bids are locker replacement at the high school, fire pump sized to provide a sprinkler system for the entire high school, and a new roof for the classroom area and gym.
