Slow start dooms Bulldogs
An early dry spell for Northern Lehigh allowed Colonial League foe Salisbury to jump out to an early 9-0 lead, which eventually ended up being the final score difference in its battle with Northern Lehigh on Wednesday night.
After the initial Falcon point spree, both sides scored exactly 49 points the remainder of the way, as Salisbury picked up a 58-49 win.Four Austin Uhl points helped the winners move out to the early lead, before two Josh Landsberger free throws got the locals off the schnide. After one period, Salisbury led 11-4."That 9-0 run was the difference in the game," Northern Lehigh's Jeff Miller admitted. "I thought we would have come out with a little more energy than we did, but still we played it out."With both sides playing games on consecutive nights, Salisbury head coach Jason Weaver saw this as an opportunity to utilize his squad's depth to their advantage."We had a couple more guys that came in and produced off the bench and I think, late in the game, that was the difference," Weaver said. "This was a good win for us and we're happy to get it."The Bulldogs were forced to play catch-up for most of the contest, and used plenty of energy to do so. Every time that they would get within a bucket, someone on the Falcons' side had the answer.Trailing by seven at the break, the Bulldogs' Tyler Dibilio hit a three to begin the comeback. Fueled by big buckets from Joe and Matt Egan, a Josh Landsberger lay-up and another Dibilio trey, Nolehi trailed 31-30 with 3:35 in the third.Eddy Sanchez dropped an immediate triple to answer, however, and at the end of the third period, Salisbury led 38-34.Both sides made big plays early in the fourth, but after a pair of Dibilio free throws, the Falcons sunk their talons deeper with a 7-0 run that made a 44-40 lead take flight to 51-40, with 2:46 to go.Attempts to foul led to Falcon free throws, and the winners improved to 14-5 overall and 11-2 in the league."It's a huge win to get over an eleven win team like Northern Lehigh, especially after a big victory over Saucon last night," Weaver said. "All things considered, this is a good win for us."Meanwhile, the Bulldog loss lands them on a tough road, in terms of making the league playoffs. With three Colonial League games left, they'll need to win out and get some help from other teams.Northern Lehigh held a slight edge on the glass, 28-26, while Salisbury committed 10 turnovers to the Bulldogs' 13.Individually, Joe Egan matched Salisbury's Sanchez with a game-high 18 points, apiece. Landsberger hit for 13 points, snared 12 rebounds and had seven blocks, while Dibilio also dropped 13.SALISBURYHadian 1-0-1-2, Sanchez 4-8-8-18, Reichenbach 1-1-2-3, Vangeli 2-1-2-7, Aungst 6-0-0-13, Uhl 3-0-2-6, Reid 2-0-0-5, Fairclough 2-0-0-4.
