No. Lehigh reaches semis

CATASAUQUA - The last time Catasauqua wrestled Northern Lehigh, the Rough Riders escaped with a one-point win.

After alternating the first six bouts of their rematch in the quarterfinals of the District 11 Class AA Team Championships, round two looked like as if it was going to be just as exciting. But the fourth-seeded Bulldogs caught fire, winning five of the last eight bouts, earning bonus points in three of them, to outlast the fifth-seeded Rough Riders 39-31.Northern Lehigh will now face top-seed Bethlehem Catholic in the semifinals, which picked up a bizarre 84-0 win after Palisades forfeited every bout.Ninth-seed Jim Thorpe suffered a 48-24 setback to the eighth-seed Palisades in the first round, eliminating the Olympians from the tournament.QuarterfinalsNo. Lehigh-CatasauquaWith the score tied 22-22 heading into the eighth match of the evening, Northern Lehigh coach Steve Hluschak knew his team needed to make a move.Freshman Ryan Farber answered the call, picking up a critical pin over Catty's Devin Greene at 132 pounds that gave the Bulldogs a lead they would never relinquish."In terms of conditioning, Ryan Farber has to be one of the best-conditioned kids out there in the entire district. He can go forever," said Hluschak. "I knew, that if he pushed the pace for six minutes, that kid (Greene) was going to tire out. And that's what happened."He was able to capitalize and get a late pin. You're not always going to come out and throw the kid around right away; sometimes you have to be persistent and it will come. That was the match that kick-started us until the end of the dual meet and allowed us to get the victory."Aside from Farber, the Bulldogs also got bonus points from Colton Rex (106), Austin Hemingway (120), Matt Schmall (126), CJ Young (145) and Jason Schaffer (220).Nate Farber (152) and Austin Arnold (170) each picked up decision victories for Northern Lehigh. While getting bonus points was crucial for the Bulldogs, not giving them up was just as important.Northern Lehigh allowed only four pins and one major decision, minimizing the damage in matches it lost."Coming into a match, it's always good knowing that certain guys don't have to win (to help the team)," Hluschak said. "If they don't give up bonus points, it's a victory for the team. And tonight, a lot of guys did their job and that's why we were successful."The Bulldogs will have to regroup quickly, as a matchup with three-time defending PIAA Class AA champion Bethlehem Catholic looms on Saturday at Freedom High School."Obviously, Becahi's a challenge," Hluschak said. "We want to be competitive and compete with them and see what happens."First RoundJim Thorpe-PalisadesPalisades flexed its muscle throughout the contest, winning nine of the 14 bouts, earning bonus points in each match."Our team was young tonight and they showed it," Jim Thorpe coach Shawn Albert said. "Whether its nerves or being overwhelmed, we just didn't perform well. Their eyes are wide open right now."While youth might have played a role in the Olympians' performance, Albert also admitted that facing a very competitive non-league foe was a factor."I'm proud to be a part of the Schuylkill League and we have some tough teams, but there's a different level of competition when you get into the (Lehigh) Valley," the coach said. "They should be proud of who they've got, in terms of the teams they have and how they compete."The only non-forfeit win for Jim Thorpe was Ali Capobianco's pin against Tighe Cashman at 132 pounds. After suffering several tough losses in last weekend's Coal Cracker Tournament, Albert was pleased with how the sophomore rebounded."I was expecting a decision out of Ali in that match," the coach said of Capobianco's performance. "But I'm really proud of how well he did tonight. He hung in there and picked up a really tough pin."Jim Thorpe's Kevan Gentile (106), Antonio Madera (145) and Ryan O'Rourke (285) each picked up forfeit wins as Palisades shifted its lineup to get favorable matchups."We knew we were going to be getting some forfeits," Albert said. "Unfortunately, those forfeits came at weights where we are strong, which hurt us as far as matchups go."While disappointed with the loss, Albert knows his team has the makeup to bounce back and finish the season strong."I told our guys it's all about how we respond from this," he said. "We're looking to turn it around, and we will."Northern Lehigh 39, Catasauqua 31106 - Colton Rex (NL) pinned Alec Hartranft in :45113 - Ryan Greene (C) pinned Jacob Kistler in 4:41120 - Austin Hemingway (NL) pinned Jason Gustin in 1:50126 - Matt Schmall (NL) pinned Antonio Castaneda in :30132 - Jacob Rusnock (C) maj. dec.
