Knappenberger, Tribe sizzle

Lehighton's Jordan Knappenberger already had a green light from three-point range.

But after Knappenberger's performance Wednesday night, Indian coach Rich Oertner might just as well take down the traffic signal altogether. That's because Knappenberger's incredible display from beyond the arc against Tamaqua probably means that green light is never going to change colors.Knappenberger shot 9-for-12 from three-point range and finished with a career-high 39 points to lead Lehighton to an 85-59 rout of Tamaqua in the opening round of the District 11 Class AAA playoffs."Jordan is a streaky shooter," said Oertner. "If he gets set, I know sooner or later he is going to make shots."That's why we give him a green light."It was the second time this season that Knappenberger, who entered the game shooting 29 percent from behind the arc, made nine three-pointers in a game."I had nine against Pleasant Valley earlier this season and thought that was a once-in-a-lifetime thing," said Knappenberger. "But I guess I was wrong."We shot a lot at practice the last couple days and I think that helped me."As impressive as Knappenberger's shooting display was, he wasn't alone.During a first half that saw Lehighton race out to a commanding 42-21 lead, Knappenberger (25 points) and Tyler Crum (17) combined for all the Indians' points. Crum finished the game with 25 points, shooting 9-for-11 from the floor, including 3-for-3 from three-point range.Knappenberger and Crum finished the game a combined 21-for-27 from the floor."Give Lehighton credit," said Tamaqua coach Caszy Kosciolek. "As poorly as they shot the last time we played them (a 66-54 Tamaqua win less than three weeks ago), that's how well they shot tonight."Both teams actually started out hot as they combined to make the game's first seven shots, leaving Lehighton with a 9-8 edge after less than three minutes of play. But while Lehighton was able to maintain the offensive pace, the Raiders couldn't."The more threes they hit, the more unorganized we became on offense," said Kosciolek about the Raiders' attempt to match Lehighton's scoring. "It was just an onslaught, It was a ball rolling down the hill that we couldn't stop."The first quarter ended with Lehighton leading 27-15. A pair of three-pointers by Knappeneberger and one by Crum to open the second quarter stretched the lead to 36-15."Jordan and I came out hot and we just kept building on it," said Crum. "I guess whatever we ate for breakfast this morning we're going to have to make sure we have it again on Friday."The Indians maintained the 21-point advantage at halftime and Tamaqua never got closer than that in the second half.Lehighton finished the game 14-for-20 from three-point range (70 percent), 28-for-43 from the field overall (65 percent), and 15-for-17 from the free throw line (88 percent)Oertner said a new man-to-man offense helped create the open looks his team got."We just put that offense in this week," he explained. "It's an old motion offense I used when I coached at Northern Lehigh."Between games, scrimmages and summer leagues, we play Tamaqua so much that Caszy knows everything we run. So we decided we would try something they haven't seen us run before and the kids did a nice job executing it."But torrid shooting performances by Knappenberger and Crum along with a new offense weren't the only reasons for the Indian rout."That's the best we played this season," said Oertner. "Our three senior starters Anthony Rossino, James Farano and Vince Mele did a great job of knowing their roles and finding Jordan and Tyler when they were open. We also got a nice contribution from Nick Chambers off the bench. He's really come a long way from the beginning of the season."Junior Brett Kosciolek led Tamaqua (13-10) with 20 points on the night. The Indians (14-10) will meet second-seeded Pottsville at 7:30 p.m. at Blue Mountain High School on Friday.TAMAQUABlaker 5-0-0-11, Miller 0-0-0-0, Rottet 2-5-6-9, Frantz 5-0-0-10, Tr.
