Keefe, Curtis going to regionals
Pleasant Valley isn't sending a huge contingent to the Northeast Regional 3A wrestling tournament this weekend, but the Bears are happy with what they accomplished over the weekend at Liberty's Memorial Gymnasium.
Brody Keefe (160) and Ahmad Curtis (HWT) were the two PV wrestlers to medal during Saturday's District 11 3A wrestling championships, as both wrestlers knocked off a pair of Liberty teammates for third place.Keefe scored a 6-1 decision over Kevin Knox, while Curtis edged Andrew Gunning 3-2 to cap off the weekend for the Bears.First-year head coach Justin Micklos knew his team would find hardships at this year's district tournament, but was thrilled to have two of his wrestlers advance to regionals."They both wrestled great," said Micklos of Keefe and Curtis. "They came back in consolations and wrestled all the way back. They showed a lot of heart and I look forward to seeing them at regionals."For Keefe, his district bronze was even more special, as his victory over Knox reversed an 8-6 defeat in the quarterfinals that Knox dealt him. Keefe heated up in the consolation bracket, picking up falls over Jared Skibinski (Emmaus) and Keith Howie (Stroudsburg) before knocking off Knox. After not placing at districts last year, the sophomore was thrilled with his third-place finish."It's really overwhelming to come back and take third," said Keefe. "Before the tournament I knew I was going to place, but I wasn't sure if I'd move on to regionals. This changes my mindset very much for next week as it gives me a lot more confidence."Curtis was another surprise, as he lost his first match of the tournament by a 4-2 decision to Dieruff's Shai Hines and came back to win five straight in the consys."He wrestled great and he just got better and better as the day went on," said Micklos. "He really showed that he wanted to get through to regionals and I'm proud of how he came back."Keefe (27-12) will now gear up to take on Kyle Kroptavich (36-8) of West Scranton when wrestling resumes at Liberty Friday afternoon. Curtis (20-8) takes on Stephane Eugene (24-5) of George Washington in the opening round. Both Bears, should they win their initial bouts, would move on to take on either of the top two seeds at their weight class.Jamall Powell (28-0) of Northeast sits at the bottom of the bracket and would await the winner of Keefe's match, while Curtis is at the top of his bracket and would meet Ryan Monk (37-2) of Dallas.
