Bears roar past Indians

A few weeks into the boys tennis season, little has been predictable.

With the ever-changing weather conditions wreaking havoc on many schedules, the season seems to have been in a constant state of flux.Despite the uneven state of affairs surrounding many area teams, one thing has remained the same: The success of Pleasant Valley. The Bears continued their dominant run to start the year on Thursday afternoon, picking up a 5-2 Mountain Valley Conference win over Lehighton.Pleasant Valley (5-0, 3-0) swept singles play, with Jon White, Jon Walmach and Stevie Berry all picking up convincing wins in straight sets. But the Bears got a particularly impressive performance from White, their No. 1 singles player, who defeated Lehighton's Tegan Durishin 6-0, 6-0."In matches like this, I feel like I can really try some things out," said White. "I think I can get more comfortable with some areas (of my game) that I don't use a lot in other matches, which is definitely a plus."A Class AAA District 11 quarterfinalist as a sophomore a year ago, White has worked tirelessly in the offseason to perfect his game and improve on last year. While the season is still young, Pleasant Valley coach Mark Allison has already seen the fruits of that labor in White's results."I think he's an even better player this year than he was last year," the coach said. "I think he's shown improvement in all phases of his game. From serving to volleying…I've been really impressed with his volleying at the net this year. He's had some really nice touch there."But outside of his game, he's also a really great kid. He goes out and works hard and does the job that he needs to do. That's the type of kid that he is."With that success comes the pressure of higher expectations, something Allison has no doubt White will be able to handle."He's responded really well," said Allison. "I know he wants to do better than he did last year. He had a good year, but he's looking to build on that this year."He's still only a junior, though. And during those first couple years of playing at the number one spot, you're still learning a few things about your game and your competition. But I think this year is going to be a really good year for him. I really feel that his experience and hard work will pay off and he's going to make some noise not only in our league, but in districts as well."While White and Pleasant Valley have their eye on success in the postseason, Lehighton (1-4, 0-4) coach Dave Sherry knows his team is still a year or two away from reaching that level."Our team is not top-heavy like their team is," said Sherry. "Their singles players are very strong. But I think it's good experience for the kids to play that level of competition."The Indians did well to take two doubles matches, as Mike Perkins and Alyssa Jordan and Thomas Phelan and Kurt Heideck picked up pro set wins in contests that went to a tiebreaker. Those wins, coupled with the encouraging performances of his singles players, has Sherry looking forward to what his team might be able to accomplish with more experience."I think we're more competitive this year than we have been in the past," Sherry said. "We're winning games and we're winning some matches."I thought Peter (Phelan) played very good tennis today against a very good player in Jon Walmach. And I think Tegan playing Jon White will help him get better. He might take some lumps this year, but he has two more years after this. All in all, I'm happy with how things are going."Pleasant Valley 5, Lehighton 2SINGLESJon White (PV) def. Tegan Durishin, 6-0, 6-0; Jon Walmach (PV) def.
