Timely hits help Indians beat Bombers

There are two important things to take away from Saturday's clash between Lehighton and Palmerton.

First, despite the lack of offense early in the season for the two squads, each team is surely capable of putting runs on the board.Second, both teams have resilience and a never give up attitude. In the end, Lehighton bounced back after letting a seven-run lead disappear and defeated the Bombers, 12-8.The Indians loaded the bases three times in the bottom of the fourth inning when they did a lot of their damage. James Farano of Lehighton did a little bit of everything which included smacking a double to deep left field that scored two runs. That gave the Indians the seven-run lead heading into the top of the fifth inning."He's been up here since he was a sophomore," said Lehighton head coach Brian Polaha. "James is a great kid who loves to compete and he'll do anything you ask of him," .The Bombers came roaring back in the top of the fifth inning. Lehighton was forced to make a few pitching changes during the inning as Palmerton showed patience at the plate; drawing a few walks, manufacturing two runs off of passed balls, and getting some timely hitting of its own.Ty Achtermann and Casey Cook were responsible for most of the Blue Bomber offense. Achtermann had three hits and three RBIs. Cook added two RBIs.After Palmerton's huge six-run fifth inning, they tagged one more run on in the top of the sixth to even the game at 7-7.."It's easy to play when you're up seven runs," Polaha said. "When a team comes all the way back on you and has all of the momentum, it's not so easy. We could have just rolled over, but we have a great group of kids and I will never expect them to do that."Momentum was certainly on Palmerton's side, however, the Indians showed resilience, as they were able to put together a five-run outburst in the bottom half of the sixth inning.Kyle Troch led off the inning with a long double to left field. Next up was Farano who laid down a perfect bunt for a base hit, moving Troch to third. Next, Brody Niehoff drove in the go ahead run."We did a great job in the bottom of the sixth and had a few clutch hits," said Polaha. "These are the kind of games early in the year you have to win."Both Poloha and Palmerton head coach Mike Svetik agreed that pitching and defense will keep you in games, but you're going to have to score some runs one way or another. For that reason, It was encouraging to see both offenses finally clicking, as the two teams combined for just one run in their previous four games."I would take 12 runs any day. If we continue to hit like this, I would think we have a pretty high ceiling," said Poloha. "The most impressive thing about today was our timely hitting. I'm very happy with the way that we responded."We have nine seniors on this team who love playing the game and I expected them to respond well."Palmerton 000 061 1 - 8 11 4Lehighton 200 505 x - 12 9 1Svetik, Buck (4), Weber (6), Kocis (6) and Cook.
